A boxer and former NRL player has been charged after allegedly stealing $2,000 in cash, various power tools and iPads, and possessing drugs.

Willis Meehan, 27, has pleaded not guilty to charges of taking and driving a conveyance, breaking, entering and stealing, prohibited drug possession and goods in custody.

Meehan, who played just one game for the Sydney Roosters in 2014 before leaving the sport behind to pursue boxing, is accused of breaking into Austwel Building Materials in Cabramatta, in Sydney’s southwest, on October 23 last year.

While inside police allege the athlete stole nine sets of keys, cash, two iPads, tools such as an angle grinder and a drill, batteries and a tool bag, the Fairfield Local Court heard on Monday.

Meehan also allegedly damaged computers and a desk inside the building, and is accused of driving a black Toyota Fortuner without the owner’s consent, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The 27-year-old was allegedly found with methamphetamine on November 7, while a series of suspected stolen goods were also found at an address he was allegedly associated with on the same day.

Two motor scooters, and several other power tools including a saw, drill, blower and impact drivers were seized from the house. 

Meehan was granted strict conditional bail by Magistrate Stuart Devine on Monday.

He had been behind bars in custody since November 8.

Under his bail conditions, Meehan must reside with his family in Liverpool, abstain from illicit drugs, report to police three times a week and has an 8pm to 4am curfew.

Meehan’s NRL career was short lived having played just one game in the league for the Sydney Roosters in 2014.

He was stood down in July, 2015 after headbutting a man and stealing his watch outside the Star Casino.

He now has an illustrious boxing career and out of his 12 fights, hasn’t lost a single one.

Ten of those ended in knockouts.
