The shows production company Northern Pictures took home the Non-Scripted Entertainment award at the International Emmy’s on Tuesday.

Series co-creator Karina Holden said she was thrilled the touching subject matter appealed to a wide audience.

‘When the participants opened their hearts to us, the world fell in love. This award recognises their generosity, we are so proud to accept,’ she said.

Showrunner Cian O’Clery said it was an honour for their ‘homegrown Australian series’ to receive international recognition.

The show premiered on the ABC in 2019 and was quickly picked up by Netflix, which helped it appeal to international audiences. 

It’s growing popularity saw an American counterpart get filmed last year and the US version won three Primetime Emmy Awards in September. 

 In July, the show’s biggest Australian star Michael Theo shared some sage relationship advice for men everywhere.

Michael shot to fame in 2020 after viewers fell in love with his blunt sense of humour and chivalrous values.

He has partnered with online cooking course company Bone Apple Tea, and believes it’s crucial in relationships for men to know their way around the kitchen. 

‘[If my future girlfriend can cook] it would be a bonus, but I would like to learn to cook myself so that way she doesn’t have to do all the cooking,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Because every woman likes a man that knows how to cook. And that’s one less thing I’ll be embarrassed about,’ the Wollongong-based Nelflix star added.
