Early Life

James Fox was born William Fox on May 19, 1939, in London, England. His father was theatrical agent Robin Fox, and his mother was actress Angela Worthington. James is the younger brother of actor Edward Fox and the older brother of film producer Robert Fox. Playwright Frederick Lonsdale was his maternal grandfather. James attended the Central School of Speech and Drama.

Career

Fox made his film debut in 1950’s “The Miniver Story” as 11-year-old Toby Miniver, and later that year, he appeared in the comedy “The Magnet.” His next film was 1962’s “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner,” and he followed it with “Tamahine” (1963), “King Rat” (1965), “The Chase” (1966), “Thoroughly Modern Millie” (1967), “Arabella” (1967), “Duffy” (1968), and “Isadora” (1968). He earned a BAFTA Award for 1963’s “The Servant” and a Golden Globe nomination for 1965’s “Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines.” James co-starred with Mick Jagger in the 1970 crime drama “Performance,” and he reportedly researched the role of gangster Chas Devlin by spending time in the criminal underworld of South London. In 1999, the British Film Institute ranked “Performance” #48 on its list of the best British films of the 20th century. After filming “Performance,” Fox took a break from acting and became an evangelical Christian. During this time, he appeared in one film, the Christian movie “No Longer Alone.” James told The Guardian in 2008, “It was just part of my journey. I think my journey was to spend a while away from acting. And I never lost contact with it – watching movies, reading about it … so I didn’t feel I missed it.”

In the ’80s, Fox guest-starred on “Play for Today” (1981) and “Love Is Old, Love Is New” (1982), and he starred in the miniseries “Nancy Astor” (1982) and “Anna Pavlova” (1983) and portrayed George Orwell in the TV movie “The Road to 1984.” He also appeared in the films “Runners” (1983), “Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes” (1984), “A Passage to India” (1984), “Absolute Beginners” (1986), “The Whistle Blower” (1986), “Comrades” (1986), “High Season” (1987), “Farewell to the King” (1989), and “The Mighty Quinn” (1989). In the ’90s, he starred in films such as “Afraid of the Dark” (1991), “Anna Karenina” (1997), “Never Ever” (1997), and “Mickey Blue Eyes” (1999), and he co-starred with Harrison Ford in the 1992 action-thriller “Patriot Games” and with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson in the 1993 Oscar-nominated drama “The Remains of the Day.” He appeared in several miniseries and TV movies as well: 1990’s “Never Come Back,” 1992’s “A Question of Attribution,” 1993’s “Heart of Darkness,” 1994’s “The Dwelling Place,” “Doomsday Gun,” and “The Old Curiosity Shop,” 1995’s “The Choir,” and 1996’s “Gulliver’s Travels.”

Fox began the 2000s with roles in the films “Up at the Villa,” “Sexy Beast,” and “The Golden Bowl” and the miniseries “Metropolis.” Next, he appeared in the films “The Prince and Me” (2004), “Wide Blue ” (2010), “W.E.” (2011), “A Long Way From Home” (2013), “The Double” (2013), “Effie Gray” (2013), and “Surviving Christmas with the Relatives” (2018), and he played Veruca Salt’s father in 2005’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” The Pope in 2007’s “Mister Lonely,” and Sir Thomas Rotheram in 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes.” James starred in the TV movies “Hans Christian Andersen: My Life as a Fairytale” (2003) and “Margaret” (2009) and the miniseries “The Lost World” (2001), “Cambridge Spies” (2003), “Doctor Who: Shada” (2003), “Colditz” (2005), “The Great Train Robbery” (2013), and “1864” (2014). He also guest-starred on “Agatha Christie’s Poirot” (2004), “Agatha Christie’s Marple” (2005), “Absolute Power” (2005), “Waking the Dead” (2007), “New Tricks” (2008) , “Midsomer Murders” (2010), “Law & Order: UK” (2011), “Merlin” (2012), “Downton Abbey” (2013), and “Death in Paradise” (2015), and he had a recurring role on the Channel 4 drama “Utopia” in 2013.

Personal Life

James married Mary Elizabeth Piper on September 15, 1973, and they remained together until her death in 2020. The couple welcomed five children together, and their sons Jack and Laurence became actors. Their daughter Lydia is married to actor Richard Ayoade, and Laurence was previously married to actress Billie Piper. In the early ’60s, Fox was in a relationship with actress Sarah Miles. In Anjelica Huston’s 2014 memoir, she stated that she became romantically involved with James when she was 17 and he was 28.

Fox has earned two BAFTA Award nominations, winning for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles for “The Servant” in 1964. His other nomination was for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for “A Passage to India” (1986). In 1966, James received a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer – Male for “Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines.” He also earned a Laurel Award nomination for New Faces, Male, in 1965 and a Photoplay Award nomination for Most Promising New Star (Male) in 1966.
