James Van Der Beek’s worldview has expanded since becoming the daddy of four girls.
The Dawson’s Creek alum, 45, who also has two sons with wife Kimberly, shared a snap of his daughter Gwendolyn, three, painting his nails with pink polish on Sunday.
And in the accompanying Instagram caption, the actor wrote: ‘#parenting perk: Surprise liberation from limited belief systems.’

James spoke about how having children, and especially daughters, has changed his view of things.
He explained: ‘Way back when we were pregnant with our first, I was on a set where the director had nail polish on one hand – black. It looked kind of emo, and someone commented on it.
‘He said – without an ounce of embarrassment – that his daughter had done it, and I recall wondering why he hadn’t taken it off before working with a crew of people who might judge him.’
‘Now I get it. It’s one of those things you can’t really convey to someone on the brink of having their first child: The complete ease with which you abandon sh*t you once thought mattered, (but probably never really did in the first place)… and the simple joy you find in things that baffled you before you became a parent.’

Picking the color: In the clip, he tells Gwendolyn she’s doing a great job and asks his daughter why she picked the color pink for him, and she responded that she thought he’d like it
Heartfelt: He wrote a long heartfelt caption alongside the picture and the clip in which he talked about how much his perception has changed since having children
He finished off his caption by writing, ‘Which is to say… if you think I’ll be removing this pink nail polish before pouring concrete with a few friends tomorrow… then you probably don’t have kids ❤️ #girldad.’
James and Kimberly, his second wife, wed in 2010.
Together they parent Gwendolyn, Olivia, 11, Joshua, 10, Annabel, eight, Emilia, six, and baby boy Jeremiah, who was born in October.

The Dawson’s Creek actor admitted that he and his wife Kimberly weren’t trying to have another child, but he thanked God ‘for the surprises.’
‘We weren’t trying for more kids. We were done. But fortunately, this chunky little angel knew better,’ he wrote on Instagram post from last year.
‘And when I hold him, I’m reminded of the benevolent forces out there likely laughing at my agenda and waiting for me to toss my ‘clarity’ for an upgraded reality,’ he continued. ‘Thank god for surprises… and thank god we SUCK at not getting pregnant. [heart eyes emoji].’
The couple has six kids: Their children are: Gwendolyn, 11-year-old Olivia, 10-year-old Joshua, 8-year-old Annabel, 6-year-old Emilia and their infant son Jeremiah, who was born last October.
