Josephine Skriver was born Josephine Skriver Karlsen on April 14, 1993, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her mother is a lesbian, and she works as an information technology analyst. Her father is gay, and he is a marine biologist. Josephine has a younger brother named Oliver, and both siblings were conceived through IVF. When Skriver was 15 years old, she traveled to New York with her football team and was discovered by a modeling scout. She signed with the Copenhagen-based International modeling agency Unique Models, and though she was regularly approached by modeling agencies outside of her hometown, she stayed in school instead of signing with any of them. After Josephine graduated, she started seriously pursuing a career as a model in 2011.

In 2013, Josephine began a relationship with Alexander DeLeon, an American musician. They announced their engagement in November 2018, and they married in Cabo San Lucas in April 2022. The couple welcomed a daughter in August 2023. Skriver is a supporter of the football club Manchester United, the NFL team the Las Vegas Raiders, and the NHL team the Nashville Predators. In 2015, the Family Equality Council named her a celebrity ambassador for its Outspoken Generation Program, which is dedicated to raising awareness about LGBTQ families. Josephine has said that she hopes her story will “not be that interesting soon, because that would mean that society has come to accept LGBT parents to be just as traditional and normal as any other way of having a family.”
