Marty Schottenheimer was an American professional football player and coach who had a net worth of $8 million at the time of his death in 2021. Marty Schottenheimer was a linebacker who played at McDonald Fort Cherry High School and played college football for Pittsburgh. Schottenheimer was drafted in both the NFL and AFL drafts in 1965. He played for the Buffalo Bills from 1965 to 1968 and for the Boston Patriots from 1969 to 1970. Marty won an AFL championship and was an AFL All-Star in 1965. He was a coach for the Portland Storm in 1974, the New York Giants from 1975 to 1977, the Detroit Lions from 1978 to 1989, and the Cleveland Browns from 1980 to 1984. Schottenheimer was head coach for the Browns from 1984 to 1988, the Kansas City Chiefs from 1989 to 1998, the Washington Redskins in 2001, and the San Diego Chargers from 2002 to 2006. He was the AP and PFW NFL Coach of the Year in 2004, and he won the UFL Championship and was UFL Coach of the Year in 2011. In 2010, Marty was inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011, and he passed away on February 8, 2021, at the age of 77.

Early Life

Marty Schottenheimer was born Martin Edward Schottenheimer on September 23, 1943, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He had a brother named Kurt, who coached for several NFL teams before becoming the head coach of the United Football League team, the Virginia Destroyers. Schottenheimer attended Fort Cherry High School, and then he played football at the University of Pittsburgh from 1961 to 1964. During his senior year, he was named a second-team All-American.

Playing Career

In the 1965 NFL Draft, Schottenheimer was selected in the fourth round by the Baltimore Colts. He also entered the American Football League Draft that year and was selected in the seventh round by the Buffalo Bills. Marty decided to sign with the Bills and spent four seasons with them. In 1965, he was a backup on their AFL Championship team, and he was an AFL All-Star selection. In 1969, Schottenheimer was sent to the Boston Patriots (now known as the New England Patriots) between the preseason and regular season. He ended up spending two seasons with the Patriots before being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers during the summer of 1971. Before the season began, he was traded to the  Baltimore Colts. Marty retired from professional football later that year and subsequently worked in the real estate industry. In 1974, he came out of retirement and signed with the World Football League team, the Portland Storm (now called the Portland Thunder), as a player-coach. He suffered a shoulder injury before the start of the season, but he stayed with the team as a linebackers coach.

Coaching Career

From 1975 to 1976, Schottenheimer was a linebackers coach for the New York Giants, and in 1977, he became a defensive coordinator for the team. From 1978 to 1979, Marty served as a linebackers coach for the Detroit Lions, and the following year, he became a defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. In 1984, the Browns promoted him to head coach, a position he kept until 1988. In 1989, Schottenheimer took a head coaching job with the Kansas City Chiefs, whom he coached for until 1998. During his time with the Chiefs, the team had a record of 101–58, and they were 1st in the AFC West in 1993, 1995, and 1997. In 2001, Marty was the head coach of the Washington Redskins (now called the Washington Commanders). The team’s record was 8–8 that season, and they were 2nd in the NFC East. After being fired by Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, Schottenheimer was hired to be a head coach for the San Diego Chargers. He stayed with the Chargers from 2002 to 2006, and team had a record of 47–33 and were 1st in the AFC West in 2004 and 2006. In 2011, Marty was the head coach and general manager of the United Football League team, the Virginia Destroyers, who won four games and lost one game that season.

Personal Life and Death

Marty and his wife, Pat, married on February 4, 1967. They welcomed two children together, and their son, Brian, became the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in early 2025. Schottenheimer was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011, and his diagnosis was made public in 2016. By that point, he hadn’t lost much of his memory or function, and he was getting ready to begin experimental treatment in hopes of slowing the disease’s progression even further. In February 2021, it was announced that Marty had entered hospice care, and he passed away in Charlotte, North Carolina, on February 8th at the age of 77.

As a football player, Schottenheimer was an AFL champion and an AFL All-Star in 1965, and he was named a first-team All-East and a second-team All-American in 1964. As a coach, he won UPI AFC Coach of the Year honors in 1986 and 1995 and was named the 101 Awards AFC Coach of the Year in 1986 and 2004, AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2004, and UFL Coach of the Year in 2011. Marty won the Greasy Neale Award in 2004, and he was inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2010.

In early 2017, Marty put his 8,165-square-foot home in Cornelius, North Carolina, on the market for $3.45 million. According to real estate records, the five-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home sold for $3.03 million later that year. The mansion was built in 2007, and the property features a wine cellar, a resort-style pool, and views of Lake Norman.
