Peter FitzSimons has humblebragged about his friend Chris Minns winning the NSW state election – a year on from seeing his other ‘mate’ Anthony Albanese land Australia’s top political job.

The author and journalist used his column in the Sydney Morning Herald last week to heap praise on the new NSW Premier’s firm opposition to building new stadiums in the state.

‘I disclose Premier Minns as a friend, but who can say he didn’t nail it?’, gushed FitzSimons.

He laid into the NRL‘s demands for ‘new boutique stadiums to be built at taxpayer expense as key infrastructure for their non-tax-paying sporting businesses’ but assured readers Minns would put a stop to it.

‘The NRL needs to get their heads around it: the days of the NSW government being bullied by them into writing huge cheques to build them new stadiums are over,’ he wrote.

FitzSimons also defended Minns from accusations of backtracking on promises.

‘Those accusing him of reneging on promises are wrong,’ he wrote.

‘For starters, he always made clear those were his priorities, just how far investment in schools had fallen behind.’

It comes almost a year after the undisputed political ‘kingmaker’ and his wife Lisa Wilkinson threw a shindig at their palatial mansion on Sydney’s north shore, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his girlfriend Jodie Haydon top of the guest list.

At the time, it was seen as a clear endorsement of Mr Albanese becoming Prime Minister.

Minns, who was elected premier of NSW after Labor won the state election last month, was also in attendance at the Australia Day bash.

The event was renamed the ‘Independence Day’ party in honour of FitzSimons’ Republican movement and was pushed a month to February 26.

Meanwhile, his wife Lisa Wilkinson was the most vocal media critic of the previous Liberal government in NSW.

She frequently lashed out at former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian while she was still a co-host of The Project.

Wilkinson and FitzSimons threw another star-studded party on federal election night last May, which became a who’s who of left-wing actors and TV stars.

After some initial concerns when the first results trickled in, the mood ‘became more and more buoyant’ as Mr Albanese edged towards a landslide victory.

The hosts marked the significance of the moment by hushing the crowd as an Indigenous guest ‘recited the Uluru Statement by heart’, The Australian reported.

Married actors Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward rubbed shoulders with the likes of WSFM radio duo Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones and Amanda Keller at the exclusive event, where the attendees ‘celebrated into the wee hours’.

The most high-profile guest was actor Simon Baker, the Tasmanian-born star of hit US TV show The Mentalist and Hollywood movies including The Devil Wears Prada.

In the 10 months since Mr Albanese’s election, FitzSimons has regularly talked up his achievements as PM, while also praising many of Minns’ policies, The Australian’s Media Diary reported.

‘With both Albanese and Minns confirmed as election-winning leaders, who can dispute FitzSimons’s position as a kingmaker of Australian politics?’, it asked.
