Early Life
Peter Sagan was born on January 26, 1990 in Žilina, Czechoslovakia. He has three older brothers and an older sister. Because his parents were mostly away running a grocery store, Sagan was raised by his sister. He began cycling when he was nine and joined the local club Cyklistický spolok Žilina.
Junior Career
In his junior career, Sagan competed in cyclo-cross and mountain bike racing. He had his breakout year in 2008 when he won the cross-country race at the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships and finished second in the junior race at both the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships and Paris-Roubaix Juniors.
Professional Career
In 2009, Sagan joined the team Liquigas-Doimo. He competed with the team from 2010 to 2014. Among his achievements during that time, he broke the record for the most stage wins in the Tour of California and won the sprints classification jersey in the race in five consecutive years. Sagan also won the Slovak National Road Race Championships three times, won the 2013 Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, and won the 2014 E3 Harelbeke. He went on to join the team Tinkoff-Saxo in 2015. That year was another successful one for Sagan, as he won both the Slovak National Time Trial Championships and the Slovak National Road Race Championships, and also won his first road race at the UCI Road World Championships. Sagan went on to win two more consecutive UCI Road World Championships road races in 2016 and 2017, accomplishing an unprecedented feat. In a busy 2016, he also won the Gent-Wevelgem, the Tour of Flanders, the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, and the first elite men’s road race at the European Road Cycling Championships. During the year, Sagan achieved the top rank in the UCI men’s road racing world ranking. He concluded the year by earning the prestigious Vélo d’Or.
Sagan competed for Bora-Hansgrohe from 2017 to 2021. His first victory with the team came at the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne in early 2017. Sagan followed that by winning the Tirreno-Adriatico. Midway through the year, he won the points classification in the Tour de Suisse for the sixth time in his career. Sagan went on to win yet another Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec. In 2022, he joined Team TotalEnergies and won his eighth career Slovak National Road Race Championships. Early the next year, Sagan announced he would be retiring after the season. His last race in 2023 was in the Tour de Vendée, where he finished ninth. After undergoing heart surgery for anomalous tachycardia in 2024, Sagan returned to racing and signed with Pierre Baguette. He finished his career in the 2024 Okolo Slovenska.
