Dangerous Liaisons: Plot, Review, Cast, Where To See, MEME, Production and More

Continues to titillate, tease, and torment with Dangerous Liaisons.

Valmont and Camille continue to flirt despite their apparent endless game-playing.

An exclusive clip from Sunday’s episode, in which the former lovers reunite in an unexpected location, was obtained by TV Fanatic.

Dangerous Liaisons has garnered so much attention that a second season has already been ordered.

It’s a prequel to Christopher Hampton’s play and Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ novel (which was made into a film by Stephen Frears).

At the opera, Camille (Alice Englert) last witnessed Valmont (Nicholas Denton) making an attempt to woo a wealthy older woman. She offers and demands in this sentence.

Plot of Dangerous Liaisons

The show is a “bold prequel of Laclos’s novel concentrating on the origin tale of how his iconic characters, the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, met as passionate young lovers in Paris on the brink of the revolution,” according to the network sponsoring the production, Starz. It will focus on their will-they-won’t-they relationship and show Camille breaking new ground in male-dominated 18th-century society by using secrets to acquire power. It is billed as a “contemporary spin on a classic.” The irresponsible libertine’s title has suddenly been snatched from him, and Valmont is preoccupied with other matters. He will do anything to regain it. Start the sarcastic asides, double-dealing, and sophisticated, seductive scheming.

Finally, it’s dawning on me that I might be single forever.

More hints are provided by the first season stills, which were made public on August 11. They feature Englert and Denton cuddling, Victoire holding what appears to be a letter addressed to Valmont, and a beaming Manville who seems to be advising her young protege at the opera. The second important lesson? The costumes, which include feathered wigs inspired by Marie Antoinette, rows upon rows of pearls, and bejeweled ball gowns, are stunning.

Dangerous Liaisons’s Trailer

On August 11, Starz released the first teaser, which is filled with all the guile and excess one might expect. A foggy aerial image of 18th-century Paris shows a corseted Camille and Victoire strolling through a stately palace’s halls as the film begins. Once they face them, she asks Valmont, “What would you sacrifice to have me back?” He replies in a whisper, “Everything.” Then, we see images of the two con artists with all of their other partners and Carice van Houten acting the part and wearing what appears to be a stunning wedding gown.

The initial trailer was released on September 28. Although Valmont is having an affair with Lesley Manville’s Marquise de Merteuil, it depicts Camille and Valmont as youthful lovers who are about to get married. He promises to show Camille his love after she learns the truth and confronts him. Her demand? That he seduces Jacqueline de Montrachet, played by Carice van Houten. There are also images of a frantic fencing battle, shotguns being fired at a hunt, fireworks lighting up the sky over the palace grounds, and Paloma Faith’s Florence de Regnier sipping champagne and grinning enigmatically.

Review of Dangerous Liaisons

Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s wicked romp of a book, “Dangerous Liaisons,” first published in 1782, can be effectively transported to the hallways of a contemporary high school where kids wield sex, power, and status like weapons with just a little airbrush. However, in this ridiculous, feeble version, filmmaker Rachel Suissa heavily Instagrams Laclos’s narrative.

At Victor Hugo High School in the southern French resort of Biarritz, Tristan (Simon Rérolle) and Vanessa (Ella Pellegrini) are a power couple looking to gain influence. She is a fading child star; he is a superb surfer and rapper. They have a deal to woo and kill a new student named Célène (Paola Locatelli), a tech celibate who lords her Luddite superiority over her shallow peers by bringing a Proust hardcover to a pool party. Together, these performative lovebirds have 10 million social media followers. They don’t care. Tristan declares the update’s central tenet: “You can be a loser and be honorable or wealthy.” “Today, fame is everything.”

Suissa displays a good deal of the directing guts necessary to execute her ecstasy-pill-fueled screenplay, which she co-wrote with Slimane-Baptiste Berhoun. The film’s energy is most vibrant in the corners, where side characters frolic at make-out parties while sporting blue mohawks and nun and mermaid costumes. It almost runs on the funny Hélose Janjaud, who plays a nerdy student who longs to change into a leather-clad vamp. However, more sleaze from Rérolle is necessary if this film is to compete with the sensual palpitations and moral degeneration of “Cruel Intentions,” the 1999 teen drama adaptation of Laclos’s novel: Instead of going from being a jerk to an honest lover, his persona only changes from being chill to cool, dousing the desire triangle’s emotional volatility.

Starz’s “Dangerous Liaisons” has a superb cast and is a great show. Lesley Manville will play Geneviève de Merteuil, Nicholas Denton will play Pascal Valmont, and Alice Englert will play Camille. Carice van Houten, from “Game of Thrones,” will play Jacqueline de Montrachet, Paloma Faith, Florence de Régnier, and Michael McElhatton, Jean de Merteuil. Kosar Ali, Nathanael Saleh, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Hilton Pelser, and Clare Higgins are among the large cast’s other members.

The show’s executive producer and showrunner are Harriet Warner (“Tell Me Your Secrets”). Executive producers include Colin Callender, Tony Krantz, Scott Huff, Bethan Jones, and Christopher Hampton. Barney Reisz, who will serve as producer, is also a part of the team.
