Early Life and Education
Shakib Al Hasan was born on March 24, 1987 in Magura District, Bangladesh to Shirin and Khondoker Reza. He started playing cricket at an early age, and was so skilled that he was often hired to play for different villages and teams. Shakib trained for six months at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan, the country’s national sports institute. For his higher education, he attended American International University-Bangladesh, from which he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
International Cricket
Shakib made his ODI debut for the Bangladesh men’s national cricket team, the Tigers, in a 2006 victory over Zimbabwe. Later in the year, he made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe. In 2007, Shakib made his Test debut in a match against India. However, his career breakthrough came in the 2008 Test against New Zealand in Chittagong, during which he picked up seven wickets for 36 runs. At the time, those were the best numbers recorded by a Bangladeshi bowler. Shakib rapidly established himself as one of the top players on the Bangladeshi team. In his Test career, he scored over 4,600 runs and took over 240 wickets, and also captained the Tigers to their first-ever Test match win against England. Shakib was even more successful in ODIs, scoring more than 7,500 runs and taking more than 300 wickets, and recording nine centuries. In other accomplishments, he led Bangladesh to its first-ever Asia Cup final in 2012, and in 2019 he broke the record for most runs scored in the group stages of the ICC Cricket World Cup. Domestic Cricket
In domestic cricket, Shakib played for multiple teams between 2004 and 2024, starting with the Khulna Division. After a stint with England’s Worcestershire club from 2010 to 2011, he played for the Kolkata Knight Riders of the Indian Premier League, the Barbados Tridents of the Caribbean Premier League, and the Dhaka Gladiators/Dominators of the Bangladesh Premier League. Shakib won league titles with the Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014, and won league titles with the Dominators in 2012, 2013, and 2016. Political Career
In 2023, Shakib joined Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League party. He went on to run as the party’s candidate for the Magura-1 parliamentary constituency, which he won in the general election in early 2024. Shakib served as a Member of Parliament for about seven months until his tenure ended upon the dissolution of the Jatiya Sangsad in the wake of the July Revolution and massacre. For his silence during these events, he was heavily criticized and accused of murder.

Controversies
Shakib has been a highly controversial figure both within and outside the world of cricket. As a cricketer, he was notorious for facing numerous disciplinary issues related to his short temper and misconduct. On several occasions, he verbally abused other players or made lewd gestures, resulting in fines and bans. In 2019, Shakib received a two-year ban for violating the ICC’s anti-corruption code after he failed to report that he had been contacted by bookmakers while playing in tournaments.
Beyond cricket, Shakib was accused of stock manipulation in 2024 and was fined by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission. Not long after that, he was accused of check fraud stemming from an unpaid loan his company had taken from IFIC Bank in 2017. After failing to appear in court in early 2025, Shakib was issued an arrest warrant and his assets were ordered to be seized.
Other Ventures
Shakib serves as the chairman of the brokerage firm Monarch Holdings. He also runs Burak Commodities Exchange Co., which is involved in the gold business, and the Shakib Al Hasan Foundation, a charitable organization.
Personal Life
In late 2012, Shakib married Bangladeshi-American Umme Ahmed Shishir, whom he had met two years earlier while he was playing county cricket for the English club Worcestershire. Together, they have two daughters named Alayna and Errum and a son named Eyzah.
