Newly beloved ABC News Breakfast sports presenter Tony Armstrong let his personality shine through during a spread in Stellar magazine this week.

The AFL star, 32, spoke about his transition from the field to television, saying he didn’t feel as nervous on screen because ‘we are just on TV talking s**t’.

He said in the issue, to be released on Sunday, that he ‘didn’t realise the gravitas of what I was doing, but that took the pressure off’.

Tony continued: ‘When I was playing sport, I was unsure and I was insecure. I probably didn’t have that trust in myself to be good enough.

‘When you want something so much and you try so hard, maybe you just repulse it a bit. What I’m doing now, I know I’m good enough.

‘But I also don’t overthink something if it goes wrong. In fact, I lean into it. I love when things go wrong. Because we are not saving lives. We are just on TV talking s**t.’

The interview will be printed alongside a photoshoot, done by photographer Steven Chee, that features Tony dressed to impress as he showcases his goofy personality.

The footy player shared a sneak peak of his cover shoot to Instagram on Thursday with the caption: ‘Absolutely, for sure, definitely, felt natural at this photoshoot and most certainly didn’t mispronounce Hermes.’

The former AFL player took part in an ill-advised segment in which he attempted to learn Irish dancing ahead of the national Eireborne tour.

As Tony scuffled on set, his colleague Michael Rowland said he ‘won’t be happy until I see Tony Armstrong do one of those high kicks’.

Tony then did a spectacular high kick in front of the crew, before stumbling off set as the hosts laughed and cheered in amazement while he joked about injuring his hamstring.

Tony cemented his newfound star status when he won the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent at this year’s Logie Awards.

Last month, he announced he was coming out of football retirement after seven years away from the AFL, having played for Adelaide, Sydney and Collingwood.

The sports star signed on with a local Victorian football club, Barwon Heads Seagulls, for the remainder of the 2022 season.
