A powerful snowstorm affecting the US northeast has dropped nearly three feet of snow on some communities, leaving residents to brave frigid temperatures without power Wednesday morning.

As of Wednesday morning, more than 240,000 customers across the region remain without electricity. The weather has also caused disruptions for air travelers, with more than 1,100 flights already canceled.

Affected states include New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire. The storm is the first nor’easter of the season, and has seen millions placed under winter storm warnings.

A nor’easter is a type of storm that travels along the Eastern Seaboard, bringing with it cold winds that hang over the Northern Atlantic and roll in from the northeast.

Making its way through those states Monday, the tempest mostly spared the Big Apple – but bombarded communities further north in places such as the Hudson Valley, where heavy rain and winds will continue into Wednesday.

Set to wrap later Wednesday morning, the storm has already wrought extensive damage – piling on trees and power lines – with more snow expected in the early morning hours.

Affected areas span for miles, all the way from Maine into southern New England.

All of the aforementioned states had already reported snowfall totals of more than two feet Monday night following the worst of the storm, creating dangerous conditions for drivers Tuesday.

The Catskills and areas surrounding Albany were among those told to stay home by the New York State Department, as the storm continued to be felt over the course of the day thanks to chilling 40mph winds that, along with the heavy snow, brought down power lines across each of the states.

Also affected were parts of Vermont, which, according to the Weather Prediction Center, could still see an additional six to twelve inches before the night is through, on top of the more than two already recorded.

Such is the case in nearby New Hampshire and Maine, where winter storm warnings are still in effect, as winds and snow continues to wallop the region.

Officials are still warning of more snowfall in those states, as well as New York to the east, where communities such as the Catskills reported more than 20 inches of the white stuff Tuesday.

More central cities, such as Saratoga and Albany, meanwhile reported more than a foot of snow – though the heaviest of the snowfall has reportedly started to subside.

Along with the additional snow, meteorologists warn that more high-speed winds are on the way for already buried residents New York, Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire, with badly bombarded Massachusetts seemingly out of the storm’s path.

The Weather Prediction Center on Tuesday warned residents of New England – which along with northern New York was hit the hardest – to expect as much as a further foot of snow to fall by sunrise Wednesday.

Even after that, officials warn that strong gusts of winds will continue into Wednesday afternoon – which could result in more power outages in both states, as well as further difficulties navigating roads .

‘We’re still expecting to see snow continue through the rest of the evening into early tomorrow morning,’ Samantha Thomas told The New York Post Tuesday night, saying coastal cities would bear the brunt of the persistent winds.

‘Winds are still going to be strong and will continue to pick up in places as we go through the next few hours, especially along coastal areas.’

Moreover, officials have warned that while out of the woods in terms of snowfall, parts of Massachusetts could still minor coastal flooding and beach erosion overnight, as temperatures rapidly warm to well above freezing.

That said, the damage in coastal communities such as Boston – which saw no snow but extensive winds – has already been done, with Boston Logan International Airport being one of the most affected by an ongoing rush of flight cancellations and delays.

And while Beantown escaped significant snowfall, more than 20 feet was recorded across several communities further inland, as well as further north and west.

The northern Berkshires, the Worcester hills and northern New England saw the most snow in the Bay State, with multiple communities surpassing 30 inches.

Also affected was New York’s LaGuardia, which along with Boston Logan, accounted for the majority of the more 1,100 cancellations and 5,200 delays seen so far.

Amid that rash of reschedulings, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a state of emergency across dozens of upstate counties in the Empire State Monday night, while warning residents in affected communities to check on their neighbors and loved ones.

Citizens are still being warned off the roads Wednesday morning, with ConEdison urging customers to avoid downed wires, citing how they could be hidden by snow, leaves, or other debris.

The power company announced Tuesday that it had brought in more than 400 outside workers to assist with outages across the five states, as nearly a quarter-million customers remain without power, often in frigid temperatures.

In Maine, similar measures are being taken, with Governor Janet Mills telling residents Tuesday to ‘stay off the roads if they can,’ and ‘give plenty of space to road crews and first responders working hard to keep us safe.’

As of Wednesday, no casualties in any of the five aforementioned states have been reported – though at least one rescue operation involving a child trapped under a fallen tree reportedly transpired.

Fire officials in the Derry, a small town 40 miles north of Boston, detailed the effort on Tuesday, revealing the unnamed child had been playing near a parent who was clearing snow when the tree suddenly fell.

Trapped for nearly 20 minutes, more than a dozen fire officials reportedly worked at alarming speed to save the youngster, using their  hands, shovels, and even  chainsaws and shovels to free the child,

After being freed, the child was taken to a hospital, the fire department said, where he was treated for minor injuries. The post detailing the heart-pounding rescue revealed the child, whose age was not provided, was in ‘good spirits.’

The storm will continue to move further inland Wednesday morning, officials say, before likely dissipating. It is not yet clear when residents in affected areas will regain power. The winter storm warnings remain in effect.
