A Utah school district is considering banning students from reading the Bible after a complaint was made about the holy book containing ‘inappropriate and pornographic’ content.

Schools across the state are using a conservative Utah law passed in 2022 to challenge dozens of books that parents, students, teachers and board members might find offensive.

A complaint was made on December 11 about the religious text, which is just one of 81 books Davis School District is considering removing.

The DSD has an eight-page policy to guide the selection and removal of materials across its 92 schools.

It most recently banned The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, along with 33 other books, as a result of the request. Thirty more were kept after the review process.

Whoever requested that the holy text be removed would have been required to present as evidence 49 pages which could be deemed as inappropriate.

The book must include indecent public displays as defined by the law, which includes a description of illicit sex or sexual immorality.

It can cover descriptions of human genitals in the state of sexual stimulation, sexual intercourse, sodomy, masturbation, erotic touching of the pubic region, buttock or female breast.

However, if a book is ruled as not being sexual, the committee will also review it for harsh language, violence, and other references that may be inappropriate for a specific age.

The group of at least seven people, which includes a district administrator, a licensed teacher who is teaching English Language Arts, a librarian, and at least four parents who have children enrolled in one of the district’s schools, will now vote on whether the Bible can remain in school libraries.

While it is not clear exactly which passages the complainant flagged up, there are several mentions of violence throughout the Holy Bible.

Some have previously said a section in the text from Deuteronomy 25:11 is violent, with the message reading: ‘If two men fight together, and the wife of one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of the one attacking him, and puts out her hand and seizes him by the genitals, then you shall cut off her hand; your eye shall not pity her.’

Another is in Luke 10:30 where Jesus says: ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.’

District spokesperson Chris Williams told ABC4: ‘It is a process. Anyone who requests a book to be reviewed has to have standing.

‘We don’t jump to conclusions, we go through the entire process. We don’t blow off one request because we think it’s silly.

‘This has been very time-consuming. We have 15 committees that have been established for this purpose.’

It is hoped that the committee will finish the review within 60 days, and it is not clear how many schools have a copy of the bible in the district.

If found in violation of the law, the Bible will be removed from all schools in the district — as was the case with the 33 previous books which were removed.

Rep. Ken Ivory, R-West Jordan, who sponsored the bill, blasted the challenge of the bible, saying: ‘It is a backhanded slap to parents that are simply trying to keep a healthy learning environment for all students in the schools.

‘I have every confidence that no school district is going to consider the Bible as violating 76-10-1227.’

He referred to the statute, which addresses descriptions and depictions of illicit sex or sexual immorality.

The district has had a policy in place for years, but it has seen a new wave of complaints under conservative law.

Williams added: ‘A parent doesn’t have to go through this entire process of having a book reviewed if they don’t want their individual child to have access to it, they can simply call a school administrator.’

A book that is under review is not removed from school shelves and it is only removed if the committee finds it inappropriate.

But the decisions made by the committee are not always agreed with by all parents, with many hitting out after the decision to remove The Bluest Eye.

Kyle Poulter branded the district as ‘pearl-clutching and white privileged’ after the decision, adding that his son will be attending one of the schools from next year.

He said: ‘Honestly, I have not been impressed with anything I have ever heard about the district.

‘This is more of the same Pearl-clutching, white-privileged BS that I have come to expect, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating.’

Since Utah’s ‘sensitive materials’ law passed, school districts have received dozens of other requests for book reviews, some spurred by parent rights organizations such as Utah Parents United and others from concerned individuals.
