An aggressive pitbull bit a teenage girl and pizza delivery driver on Morley Street in Rochdale, Greater Manchester

A ferocious pitbull attacked a teenage girl and a pizza delivery driver on a ‘busy street’ where ‘kids always play’ before being shot dead by police, neighbours have said.

Residents on Morley Street, Rochdale said the aggressive dog was running loose for hours on Friday night before it bit the girl on the arm and leg as she bent down to stroke it.

It then bit a pizza delivery driver on the calf as he got out of his car before hiding under a caravan on the street for 45 minutes, it is claimed.

The dog was shot dead on the doorstep of a terraced house 20 yards from the attacks by police, who arrived at the scene at 9.30pm after the attack began at around 7pm.

Police said nobody was seriously injured by the dog.

A neighbour said that Morley Street is very busy and everyone sits outside at night while the kids play outside, meaning that the attacks could have been much worse.

They added that the police did a very professional job, giving the dog time to calm down and asking everyone to stay indoors.

One neighbour said: ‘It started walking towards a lady police officer and she tasered it. The dog started running and they just shot it.

‘I’ve never seen anything like it, I’ve never seen a gun being fired before. It was distressing.’

The neighbour added that the dog bite left the girl bleeding and made her drop her phone.

Another witness said: ‘It was brutal, horrible. There were about 20 police officers. They blocked off the road.

‘At first I think they shot with him with a Taser. Then I heard another shot. It ran down the street trying to get in all the houses.

‘He was limping. Then they shot him on the doorstep.

‘It was so loud. You could still smell the gunpowder about half an hour later.

‘My daughter was upstairs. She couldn’t stop crying, she was so scared.’

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement on Saturday: ‘At around 9.30pm last night (Friday, August 6), police were called to reports of a dog loose on Morley Street, Rochdale.

‘Officers attended and found that two members of the public had been bitten by the dog who was acting in an aggressive manner.

‘Unfortunately, due to the nature of the incident, the dog was humanely destroyed as a safety precaution due to the number of people in the area and the injuries caused. Enquiries are ongoing. No serious injuries were reported.’

The incident happened in the same town where a three-year-old boy was mauled to death by a dog only months ago.

Daniel Twigg was savaged by a dog while playing outside a house in Milnrow, less than four miles away from this incident, on May 15, this year.
