Wimbledon reportedly failed to sell 25,000 tickets during the latest Championships

Wimbledon fell way short of meeting their pre-tournament ticketing hopes after reportedly failing to sell 25,000 tickets during the Championships.

It comes despite the All England Club benefiting from play on Middle Sunday for the first time ever, with almost 40,000 people passing through the gates on 3 July.

And despite recording a total tournament attendance of 515,164 – the highest number recorded at Wimbledon since its inception in 1877 – The Telegraph claim they still did not manage to collect a six-figure sum from ticket sales.

The All England Club are therefore planning on leading a ticketing review, which will include looking at how the queue for ground passes could be improved after they failed to bring in the numbers expected.

The report claims there are no plans for the physical queue to be scrapped, but adds Wimbledon will weigh up ways to ensure it also has an online presence.

However, SW19 chiefs have rejected claims prices – which saw spectators charged £240 for both the men’s and women’s singles final – and reduced interest are behind the failure to meet ticket goals.

The same report claims the most expensive tickets were all bought, while a record 2.3 million strawberries consumed were consumed across the Championships.

There was also a reported drop in television viewing numbers, with 7.5million watching Novak Djokovic claim his seventh Wimbledon title after beating Nick Kyrgios in four sets on Centre Court.

But that figure is down 2.1m on the television viewing numbers for the 21-time Grand Slam winner’s thrilling five-set victory against Roger Federer in 2019.

That is however nuanced by the fact 2.6m people did watch Sunday’s final on BBC Sport Online or BBC iPlayer, which is believed to be a huge increase from three years ago.

Elena Rybakina’s victory over Ons Jabeur in the women’s singles final peaked at a 3.1m television audience, more than a million short of the 4.5m for Ashleigh Barty’s only SW19 triumph last year against Karolina Pliskova.

Total television figures were very slightly down, with 25.5m watching across the fortnight, but more than 23m watching online.

All England Club chief executive Sally Bolton told The Telegraph: ‘We are not jumping to conclusions.

‘Demand for all our show-court tickets is as high as it has ever been. Where demand is softer is at the end of the queue.

‘It’s ground tickets that would usually be sold from lunchtime onwards. The world has changed. All of our behaviours have changed.

‘For many years we were challenged with excessive numbers of people joining the queue and being able to accommodate them in the park.

‘We have this delicate balance of promoting the queue but not finding ourselves where we are turning people away.

‘We want to protect the existence of the queue, we just want to make sure we are being thoughtful about how we evolve it and making sure it continues to be relevant and attractive to people.’
