Joseph Clifford ‘Joe’ Montana Jr. was born in New Eagle on 11 June 1956 – his zodiac sign is Cancer, and he holds American nationality. He spent 17 years competing in the National Football League (NFL), playing for the San Francisco 49ers for 14 seasons, and the Kansas City Chiefs for the remaining three.

Joe was raised in the coal mining town Monongahela, Pennsylvania, by his mother Theresa Marie Bavuso Montana, who passed away in 2004, aged 69, and his father Joseph Clifford Montana Sr. who passed away in 2017, aged 85.

Joe became interested in sports at a very early age, and it was his father who taught him to play football; he was eight when he began playing youth football.

Joe studied at Waverly Elementary, which was followed by his enrollment at Finleyville Junior High and then Ringgold High School. He played various sports during his high school years, including football, basketball and baseball, and upon matriculating in 1974, he enrolled at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, after having been offered a football scholarship. He played for their Fighting Irish football team for the following five years, when he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, and made himself eligible for the 1979 NFL draft; he was picked by the 49ers as the 82nd overall pick.

He became their starting quarterback in 1981, when the 49ers had an amazing season, winning 13 of their 16 games, and went on to face the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl VXI, played on 24 January 1982, defeating them 26-21. Joe was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The 49ers then reached Super Bowl XIX, playing against the Miami Dolphins on 20 January 1985, and defeating them 38-16; Joe was once again named Super Bowl MVP.

Joe had to miss the 1991 and 1992 seasons because of an elbow injury, and Steve Young proved to be a good quarterback during those two years; because of this, Joe requested to be traded away by the 49ers.

He signed a $10 million three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on 20 April 1993, but two years later, on 18 April 1995, Joe announced that he was retiring.
