Causes of Death

Carter Cheung died in Sydney after falling ill with Covid-19, his parents making the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support on Saturday.

“NSW Health asks that the privacy of this child’s family be respected during this very difficult time.”

A fundraiser has been organized to support the family at this difficult time.

Of the three adults who died with the virus, one was in his 70s, one was in his 80s and one was in his 90s.

New cases of the virus fell by 1,843 in the 24 hours to 4 p.m. m. on Sunday, in line with a typical drop in case reporting over the weekend.

However, there are now 1,163 patients with the virus in NSW hospitals with the increase predicted by health authorities who say the state is on the verge of a wave of new cases as the new BA subvariant takes hold. 2 from Omicron.

UNSW researchers who predicted the explosion of Omicron COVID cases in January say the more transmissible BA2 has become dominant and will lead to a dramatic rise in cases.

NSW Health said the boy was ‘previously well’ before his death on Sunday.

They predict a subsequent rise in hospitalizations and intensive care, but say most who have received a booster shot should be protected against serious illness.

There are 34 people with the virus in intensive care.

NSW Health reports that 58.4 per cent of people have received three doses of a covid-19 vaccine, with 79.3 per cent of people aged 12 to 15 having received two injections and 48.9 percent of children ages five to 11 have received a dose.

The latest deaths bring the number of Covid-related deaths in NSW from the start of the pandemic to 2027.

In January, an eight-year-old baby died after testing positive for the virus, becoming the youngest person in Australia to die of Covid-19.
