American actor James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther on the television comedy Friends, has died at the age of 59.
Tyler passed away peacefully at his Los Angeles home Sunday morning, a statement from his manager said.

“If you knew him once, you made a friend for life,” he would say. “He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno, the love of his life.”
Tyler was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2018 that later spread to his bones.
“Wanting to help as many people as possible, he boldly shared his story and became an activist for people with prostate to have … a blood test at age 40,” said the manager of he.

While he didn’t have the same amount of screen time as the six main characters on Friends, Gunther was and continues to be a popular figure with fans.
Gunther worked as a waiter and manager at the show’s cafeteria, Central Perk.
He had a crush on Jennifer Aniston’s character Rachel throughout the series, who also worked there as a waitress in the early seasons of the show.
“The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh friend) … but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer awareness advocate and loving husband,” said his manager.
