Who was Sharn Iona Hughes ?
A mother of two was killed in a collision on a dark stretch of road after getting out of her car to take a picture of the castle. I’m a celebrity … Get me out of here in Wales.
Sharn Iona Hughes traveled ten miles from her home to Gwrych Castle in Abergele, North Wales, to see the lights on the set of the ITV show on November 21 last year.
Ms. Hughes and her husband Elfyn, from Prestatyn, stopped at a siding on the A547 at 5pm to take a picture of the castle when a blue Volvo estate crashed into her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time, there was a 60 mph limit on the A547 outside Gwrych Castle, where I’m a Celebrity was filmed since September 2020, but it has since been lowered to a temporary restriction of 20 mph.wikipedia
An investigation in Ruthin, North Wales, heard that the conclusion of death was recorded due to a traffic collision. Home Office pathologist Dr. Brian Rodgers said she would have died instantly from multiple traumatic injuries.
How old was Sharn Iona Hughes ?
She was 58 year old.
Murder
PC Richard Witham said a Volvo traveling toward Llanddulas emerged from a left turn when the collision occurred, causing “catastrophic” injuries to Ms Hughes.
Widower Elfyn Hughes, a retired math director, left the courtroom when the coroner described his and the pathologist’s statement.
His late wife, a trailer sales controller and church treasurer, was “extremely conscientious about road safety,” he said.
She said she had wanted to see the castle lights at night and they drove down the unlit A547 single carriageway before leaving her car in a parking lot outside the castle walls.
Hughes said she heard a “big metallic bang” and thought it was “bricks falling from the back of a truck” until he saw the taillights of a car, when he assumed there had been a collision between the cars.wikipedia
Unaware that his wife had been murdered at the time, he motioned to stop the oncoming traffic.
Death
He said: ‘Her curiosity led her to want to see the lights at Gwrych, which unfortunately led to her untimely death.
‘As a family, we are truly heartbroken. I was hoping to take a photo and send it to a friend.
‘She was so selfless. We will miss her kindness and thoughtful nature forever. ”
Shaun Davies, the driver of the Volvo, said he had been driving at 60 mph when a dark-clad woman came out of an archway, but that it was “too late” to avoid her.
The police took no further action against him.
Forensic collision investigator Simon Richards said the A547 was very dark and had a parking lot across the road.
Another car had been making a U-turn and Richards said, “I don’t think (Mr. Davies) would have been able to see the pedestrian and react to their presence.”
Signs and traffic cones have been placed along the road, including at the scene of the tragedy, to discourage parking and warn “pedestrians.”
Temporary 30 mph and 20 mph speed limits have also been introduced outside the castle, where I’m a Celebrity was filmed last year after it was moved from its normal Dungay location in Australia due to travel restrictions amidst the Covid pandemic.
The easing of Covid restrictions is expected to lead to a large influx of Ant and Dec fans to the Abergele area.
Ms. Hughes was known and popular in the Prestatyn area. She was treasurer of St Melyd Church and a member of the Gwaenysgor Choir, and Trelawnyd and Dyserth WI.
Senior Coroner John Gittins told his family, “No wonder you should be proud of this woman.”
He urged fans of I’m a Celebrity to ‘make sure they fully observe all security measures in place’ at Gwrych Castle.
The picturesque Grade I listed Gwrych Castle was built in 1810 on the grounds of a medieval house and spans 250 acres of gardens and grounds.
Just seven days after Ms Hughes’s death, the body of a cyclist was found in a forest near Wales Castle.
Investigation
The discovery was made on November 28 in an Abergele forest, less than a mile from Gwrych Castle.
North Wales police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the man who was found near Lady Emily’s Tower shortly before 11 a.m.
Detectives, who were briefed on the discovery by paramedics, conducted door-to-door investigations after the man’s car was found parked in the area.
During the filming of I’m A Celebrity, more than 40 security guards protected fellow campers at Gwrych Castle with local roads, a campground, and an agricultural park near the site, all closed.
Guards in high-visibility jackets were seen at entrances sealed with wire fences while guards wearing night-vision goggles patrolled into the woods around the camp.
The coroner had contacted the executive director of the Conwy council, Iwan Davies, to ask about security measures.
Through a police liaison officer, Ms Hughes’s family said they were grateful to the council and the North Wales police for the steps taken to try to prevent another tragedy.
