Who was Steve Jagielka ?

English footballer Phil Jagielka’s brother Steve died after taking cocaine and methadone, an investigation heard today, as his ex-wife pays tribute to the former Shrewsbury Town star.

The 43-year-old man, who was preparing to move house, was found dead after a cousin called him at his home in Rodington Heath, Shropshire, on March 15 this year, a hearing at Shrewsbury’s Shirehall was reported. .

The Sale-born midfielder, who made more than 170 appearances for Shrewsbury between 1997 and 2003, had been working as an adjuster in the Manchester area prior to his death and had been packing items on his property, the coroner heard from Shropshire, John Ellery.wikipedia

Statements read in the investigation said that post-mortem examinations had shown that Mr. Jagielka, who had no significant medical history, died of aspiration pneumonia caused by methadone toxicity.

Mr. Ellery also heard that there were reports of possible cocaine use in the days leading up to the former footballer’s death, with samples showing high levels of methadone and ‘moderate’ levels of cocaine.

A neighbor called the police at Mr. Jagielka’s home, after the former athlete’s cousin alerted them to what had happened, according to the investigation.

An investigation found no suspicious circumstances at the property, where the electricity had ‘run out’ and ‘it was clear that the house was in the process of being packed up’.

In a statement at the end of today’s hearing, Jagielka’s ex-wife, Jo Fallows, said: ‘Steve had a lasting impact on the lives of many people.

This is how we would like to be remembered: a charming and fun-loving character. His three children, myself and all of his family and friends will miss him. RIP Steve.

In reaching his conclusion after the brief hearing, Mr. Ellery said: ‘The medical cause of death is given as aspiration pneumonia due to methadone toxicity.

“There is no suggestion that Steve’s death was deliberate and I am aware that his death was drug related.”

Speaking after the hearing, Miss Fallows said of her ex-husband: “Wherever he went, everyone knew him.”

Soccer had been a passion and “everything she had known” for Jagielka, who went on to work locally for Caterpillar and had his own plumbing business, Ms. Fallows said.

“I think the PFA (Professional Footballers Association) should help them a little more,” she added.

After playing for Shrewsbury, Jagielka, the older brother of former England defender and Everton Phil, went on to help Accrington Stanley gain promotion to the Football League.

He was also at Sheffield United and AFC Telford United.


In a statement issued shortly after his death, the South Yorkshire club said: ‘Sheffield United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Steve Jagielka, brother of current defender Phil, at the age of 43.

“The condolences of everyone at the Blades go out to Phil and the rest of the Jagielka family at this difficult time.”
