A 13-year-old North Carolina boy wanted for the murder of his grandmother was shot and killed Friday by police.
The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to Raeford home Thursday morning for a welfare check. They found 68-year-old Connie Linen dead inside.
After canvasing the area and collecting evidence, they identified Linen’s 13-year-old grandson, identified as J.A., as the suspect in her murder and charged him with first degree murder.
Officers from multiple jurisdictions, including the State Bureau of Investigation, launched an search for the boy, who was ultimately found in nearby Lee County.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said they found the boy in his grandmother’s stolen vehicle, behind an abandoned mobile home.
“As deputies approached, the suspect fled on foot, running across the street and into a wooded area,” the sheriff’s office said.
The office said that as deputies chased the boy, he “retrieved a piece of 2×4 lumber from the yard of a nearby residence and charged toward a deputy.”
“In close proximity, the deputy discharged his weapon, striking the suspect,” officials said.
Deputies attempted to render life-saving aid, but the boy was pronounced dead at at the scene.
The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation of the shooting incident.
