A Chicago woman has been charged with carjacking an UberEats driver, who was struck and killed by his own vehicle as it fled the scene.
Montoya Perry, 33, is charged with murder and vehicular hijacking, WLS reports.
Police said that Perry “participated in taking a vehicle” from 28-year-old Daniel Figueroa at around midnight on Monday, WHBQ said. The incident took place near Loretto Hospital on the west side of the city, where Figueroa had delivered food to a doctor.
His body was later found in the street.
Police provided no further information, and specifically did not explain the “participated in” statement about their suspect. It’s unknown if they’re looking for anyone else for the murder or if the phrase was just poor cop speak.
Loretto Hospital and UberEats both provided statements expresssing condolences for the “tragic” incident and said they were cooperating with police.
Figueroa’s father, Carlos Figueroa, said his son “was a good kid” with “a family that loved him.”
“He was too young to die,” the father said. “A parent isn’t supposed to bury their children.”
Figueroa’s girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero, said his mother called her at 7 a.m. to tell her of Figueroa’s death, WLS said.
“Today, it’s my son’s birthday,” she said. “We had the whole day planned out for him to spend it with him. And it, just, I can’t believe it right now.”
She said Figueroa treated her son like his own and worked multiple jobs to help support the family.
