A Massachusetts mother accused of killing her children will be formally charged today, while a GoFundMe fundraiser created to help her husband has surpassed $1 million.
Lindsay Clancy, 32, is scheduled to be arraigned in Plymouth District Court at 2 p.m. today. She faces charges of murder, “strangulation or suffocation,” and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to the Boston Herald. She’s currently recovering in a local hospital and will attend the hearing via a Zoom teleconference.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, the charges are in connection with the alleged murders of Clancy’s three young children. On January 24, medics were called to the family’s Duxbury residence off Summer Street after the defendant’s husband, Patrick, arrived home and found the children unconscious.
The two oldest kids, identified as 5-year-old Cora Clancy and 3-year-old Dawson Clancy, were later declared deceased at a hospital.
A day later, the couple’s third and youngest child, 8-month-old Callan Clancy, also died. The defendant jumped out of a second-story window in a reported attempted suicide after the attack but survived.
Matthew Glaser organized the GoFundMe fundraiser to help the family “pay for medical bills, funeral services, and legal help.” As of Tuesday, it surpassed the goal of the fundraiser reaching $1 million.
“This assistance is especially needed because Pat will be unable to work for the foreseeable future as he weathers this painful, life-altering tragedy,” Glaser wrote. “We all know Pat to be the most kind and genuine person. As someone who is always willing to support others, we sincerely thank you for offering yours.”
Meanwhile, Clancy remains hospitalized and according to her lawyer, Kevin J. Reddington, she’s unable to walk. Reddington also said she was taking a plethora of prescription drugs and was “heavily overmedicated” at the time of the incident.
“She can’t get out of bed. She can’t walk. I don’t know what the medical prognosis is regarding that, but right now she cannot walk” he said. “She’s not in good physical shape. She’s not in good emotional shape.”
He plans to argue that she shouldn’t be charged criminally and wants a forensic psychologist to determine if she was undergoing a post-partum mood disorder.
“This continued even up until the week before when her husband went to the doctor and asked her for help and said, ‘Please, you’re turning her into a zombie,’” Reddington said of Clancy’s medication use.
According to The Boston Globe, the defendant had been taking the following prescribed medications, in part, when the killings occurred:
- Ambien
- Klonopin
- Valium
- Prozac
- Lamictil
- Ativan
- Remeron
- Seroquel
- Zoloft
“It’s overmedication, absolutely overmedication — possibly with a component of post-partum depression,” Clancy said last week.
Meanwhile, investigators are exploring whether Lindsay Clancy was dealing with postpartum psychosis at the time of the slayings, WBZ-TV reports. She reportedly worked as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital at the time of the incident but was on leave.
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz obtained warrants last month for Clancy’s arrest.
