Kentucky Man Jailed for Murders of Mom, Teen Daughter

A Kentucky man was charged last week the murders of a 37-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter in Morehead.

The Rowan County Coroner’s Office said it was called to the scene on Friday by Morehead Police, who found “two obvious deceased individuals” after receiving a 911 call from a person who conducted a welfare check on a co-worker who hadn’t come to work that morning.

Kentucky State Police identified the victims as Kayla D. Blake and her daughter, Kennedi McWhorter. They did not say how the pair died.

Investigators identified Joshua W. Cottrell, 44, as the suspect and found him at a hospital in Paducah, more than 300 miles away. They did not say why he was in the hospital, but he was “treated, released, and charged with two counts of murder and one count of tampering with physical evidence,” state police said.

They did not characterize the relationship between Cottrell and the victims.

Cottrell remains in jail in Paducah, they said.
