Louisiana Parents Charged After Newborn Died With Severed Lower Spine

A Louisiana couple hhas been charged with murder in the death of their 2-month-old daughter who suffered internal bleeding when her lower spine was severed.

Opelousas Police said they were called to a home on October 25 just after 8 p.m. and found the newborn not breathing. Officers began life-saving measures and paramedics took her to a hospital, but the baby was pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy determined that the infant suffered severe neglect and physical abuse, including extreme dehydration and malnourishment, broken ribs, and the severed lower spine.

Police obtained arrest warrants charging Kaylee Fontenot and Taylor Broussard, 18, with first degree murder, cruelty to juveniles, and second degree battery.

“Our hearts are with this infant who suffered unimaginable abuse,” said Opelousas Police Chief Graig LeBlanc. “This case is in its early stages, and our investigators are working tirelessly to uncover every detail. We ask the public for patience, cooperation, and assistance in helping us pursue justice.”

Fontenot was taken into custody on Friday and Broussard on Monday. Fontenot is no longer listed in jail records, while Broussard is.
