Laura Dern is set to star as Miami Herald journalist Julie K. Brown in a potential scripted TV series about the Jeffrey Epstein case, Variety reported.
The TV series is based on the book “Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story.”
Sony Pictures Television is shopping the project and describes it as “an explosive account of an investigative reporter exposing the secret plea deal between Epstein and federal prosecutors. Drawing from Brown’s experience as a groundbreaking reporter for the Miami Herald, the book and the limited series follow her relentless years-long investigation that identified 80 victims, persuaded key survivors to go on the record, and led to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s arrests.”
Adam McKay, known for his work on “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” “The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up,” is set to produce.
If the project is picked up, it would be the first scripted series about the Epstein case. Epstein was indicted for sex trafficking minors in 2019; he died while in federal custody. In 2008, he was convicted of soliciting prostitution from a minor. He was sentenced to 18 months.
There have been several documentaries about Epstein’s life and the life of his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell, including Netflix’s “Filthy Rich” docuseries. Maxwell was convicted of child sex trafficking in 2021.
