Questions Remain After Body Is Found in Hospital’s Water Tank

Oklahoma authorities are still investigating after a body was found in a hospital’s water tank last week.

On November 20, the body was pulled from a water tank at the Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Hospital officials said the body was discovered during a routine check of the water-cooling tower, according to The Oklahoman.

Police said the incident is not being investigated as a homicide. The decedent’s name, age, and gender remain undisclosed.

Hospital officials explained that the water from the tower does not enter the building. The water stays in the tower and is chemically treated to disinfect the water in a closed loop.

“[This] closed-loop chilled-water system supplies clean, chemically treated water to air handlers and fan coils within the buildings. The chilled water loop only transfers heat through heat exchangers at the cooling tower to cool the building and does not mix with the cooling tower water,” officials also said in a statement to The Oklahoman.

According to KFOR, investigators believe the body had been in the water tank for some time before it was found. Foul play is not suspected.

A medical examiner will determine the cause of death in this case. This can take several weeks if coroners need to conduct additional testing.
