Seven teenagers have been arrested after they crashed a car into a tree while fleeing police, following an alleged home invasion crime spree.

Footage of the allegedly stolen BMW smashing into a tree on a narrow suburban street in Melbourne showed the moment leaves rained down onto the road as several teenagers slowly emerged from the stricken car.

The teens were seen staggering out of the car, with some crawling on the ground while others ran around the vehicle.

Police eventually caught up with the shell-shocked group, arresting all of them.

One teen, who was travelling in the boot at the time, was knocked unconscious during the collision in Chelsea St, Brighton, in Melbourne’s south, and landed in hospital under police guard.

The young group’s alleged crime rampage started in the early hours of Tuesday morning, in the Bayside area of Melbourne.

Two houses were allegedly targeted by the group, all aged between 14 and 16.

Brighton resident Doug Dowsett told Daily Mail Australia he saw torches being used inside a neighbouring home the alleged thieves had targeted.

‘I was watching the whole thing, we were alerted because there was an idling car outside our house at 3am, which is obviously fairly suspicious,’ Mr Dowsett said.

‘My wife woke me, and we went around our house to check it out, then saw there were torches in our neighbour’s place next door.’

At that stage, the vigilant neighbour rang police but was told they were busy attending to other burglaries.

Despite that, officers managed to arrive within about 15 minutes – but not before Mr Dowsett saw the group running from the homes.

‘It’s intimidating, but unfortunately it’s part of what has been going on … over the last Covid [lockdowns],’ he said.

Mr Dowsett also said police are under resourced in the locality, with only two cars to patrol a 12km Bayside strip and the entire area around it.

His neighbour, whose home was allegedly raided by the teens, told 7News he heard a noise in his home garage and went to investigate.

David McKern, 83, confronted the group as they allegedly attempted to steal his car – but instead they allegedly got away with some cash.

The Bayside man said he used a mop to scare them off.

The teens allegedly moved on from there, entering and wandering inside another nearby property before fleeing the scene – when they crashed the car.

The BMW in the crash had been allegedly stolen a week before from Mount Waverley, in Melbourne’s east, and was alleged to be used in other attempted criminal pursuits during the week.

Victoria Police is yet to lay any charges against the teenagers.

The high-speed crash comes after police said they caught up with a driver who was driving dangerously during a police pursuit last Friday in Melbourne’s south east.

A police helicopter followed the car through various suburbs, where the vehicle was allegedly clocked travelling at 150km/hr in a 100km/hr zone.

Two male occupants in the car were eventually arrested and charged.
