Remember those “book reports” you had to write in middle school as a kid, hoping to never deal with it again? Maybe you do; maybe you don’t. But for the people charged in crimes related to the Capitol Hill protests on January 6th, that memory of the past is now an ongoing nightmare.

Huffington Post recently wrote a piece promoting a “remedial social studies program” led by D.C.-based lawyer H. Heather Shaner. The program allegedly exists to help those charged with crimes at Capitol Hill apologize for their actions and grow as people, which is to say that it is in reality a tool to push propaganda while punishing political dissidents.

Don’t take our word for it though. Here is a passage from the aforementioned article talking Shaner’s interactions with her own clients:

Shaner is one of many D.C. lawyers assigned to represent Capitol defendants who can’t afford their own attorneys, as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and as laid out in the Criminal Justice Act. In addition to representing her clients in court, Shaner has seized an opportunity to try and educate them on the history their teachers glossed over.

Shaner regularly sends her clients who are incarcerated pretrial books to read: “They’re a captured audience, and it’s life-changing for a lot of them.”

But she decided to take an even more intensive approach with her Capitol clients, who were part of another ugly, historical event in American history.

“Reading books and then watching these shows is like a revelation,” Shaner told HuffPost. “I think that education is a very powerful tool … So I gave them book lists and shows that they should watch.”

Notice the emphasis on re-education by Shaner and HuffPo alike, particularly when it says “In addition to representing her clients in court, Shaner has seized an opportunity to try and educate them on the history their teachers glossed over,” and that “she decided to take an even more intensive approach with her Capitol clients, who were part of another ugly, historical event in American history. ”

This mission that Shaner had embarked on involved instructing her clients to read various “pretrial books” and “shows that they should watch.” They were then required to draft papers explaining what literature they had read or watched along with what they learned from it. Shaner told the defendants that should they do these things their chances of receiving a shorter sentence are greater.

One such defendant is Anna Morgan-Lloyd, who in her own words is a grandmother from a “very small town” in southern Indiana filled with “simple people who love our country.”

At the direction of Shaner, Morgan-Lloyd drafted a report on the movie Schindler’s List, summarizing it and then emphasizing that she does not agree with holocaust denial and that her “son-in-law” supposedly downplayed its historical reality.

This movie was very moving. Hard to watch and hard to not watch. It’s hard to believe
there are people who say this never happened.

One of my Sons-in-Law is ½ German. His mother was born in Germany and has never
became an American Citizen. My Son-In-Law doesn’t believe the Holocaust happened
as it did. He says “Only” a million Jews died. One person being killed because of their
faith is too many!

Morgan-Lloyd has seemingly tried to be, to use the words of the Huffington Post, “socially conscious” in other ways too, explaining to a judge “I’ve learned that even though we live in a wonderful country things still need to improve. People of all colors should feel as safe as I do to walk down the street.”

Shaner appeared to very proud of her work with Morgan-Lloyd and others, proclaiming that she is at last able to provide those arrested at Capitol Hill the education they didn’t know they needed.

“I’m allowed to say what the teachers aren’t, because I’m not an employee,” Shaner said. “I told them what my mom always told me, which is that this is the most wonderful country in the world, it’s been great for all kinds of immigrant groups, except for the fact that it was born of genocide of the Native Americans and the enslavement of people.”

Shaner nor the Huffington Post explained how expressing sympathy for various minority groups has anything to do with trespassing on taxpayer-funded federal property.
