The San Francisco 49ers enter Sunday night with postseason positioning still very much in play.

With two games left on the schedule, the path is clear but narrow. Win, and the picture sharpens. Slip, and the margins tighten quickly. As preparations continued this week, one development shifted how the matchup shapes up.

That shift came from Chicago.

Bears Will Be Without a Key Offensive Weapon

The Chicago Bears ruled out wide receiver Rome Odunze for Sunday night vs the 49ers due to a foot injury.

It will mark the fourth straight game Odunze has missed.

Before the injury, Odunze had established himself as quarterback Caleb Williams’ favorite option. He leads the Bears in targets and routinely drew the first look on key downs. And when Chicago needed a play, Williams often looked his way.

Without him available again, the Bears will continue leaning on a reshaped receiving hierarchy.

Bears WR Luther Burden is set to make his return this Sunday night vs the 49ers. GREAT NEWS. đź‘€

WR Rome Odunze is unfortunately OUT for this week.

How Chicago Has Adjusted Without Odunze

Chicago has found production, even without its top target.

Wide receiver DJ Moore has stepped into a larger role and is coming off a 97-yard, one-touchdown performance, showing his ability to carry the passing game when needed. Luther Burden III looks set to return, and has also seen his involvement increase, drawing more targets as Chicago looks to spread responsibility across the offense.

The 49ers’ secondary has dealt with its share of pressure this season, particularly when injuries tested depth and continuity. That group has steadied in recent weeks, but facing a full-strength Bears receiving corps on a short week would have added another layer of difficulty.

Without Odunze, the coverage picture becomes more manageable. San Francisco can be more selective with matchups and avoid committing extra resources to a single threat on every key down.

Where the 49ers Stand Health-Wise Entering Sunday Night

San Francisco still has its own questions to navigate.

The 49ers elevated tight end Brayden Willis from the practice squad, a move that provides insurance. Tight end George Kittle remains questionable with an ankle injury, with the team expected to make a final call closer to kickoff.

There is more encouraging news elsewhere. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall practiced throughout the week and is trending toward returning. His presence would add stability to the offense regardless of how the tight end situation resolves.

Final Word for the 49ers

The 49ers have already secured a playoff spot. What remains is positioning.

A win over Chicago would set up a regular-season finale against the Seattle Seahawks with seeding and division implications still unresolved.

Losing Caleb Williams’ favorite target does not decide the game. But in December, under the lights, even a small edge can matter.
