15 years ago, something happened that changed the course of my life. Just before heading off on a family skiing holiday, I started to get terrifying premonitions that my daughter was going to suffer a serious accident.
The closer the trip got, the stronger the images became. It felt so real and different to anything else I’d experienced that I couldn’t ignore it and we cancelled the holiday.
Once I opened myself up to the idea that the universe had sent me a message, other things started to happen too, including an ability to sense a presence or spirit when visiting a house. It happened so much that ten years ago I quit my job in the corporate world to focus fully on my work as a home healer. I am able to remotely tap into the energy of a house, sense whether a spirit is there and move it on, clearing the property and totally transforming the energy of the home.
To date I have healed over 1000 homes. In my experience, these are the six telltale signs that you’re not alone in your home…

Strange smells
Smoke is the most common. When people first move in they assume any smoke or tobacco smells are left over from the previous owner. But some find that the smell continues and even gets stronger, despite changing carpets and curtains. It’s likely that the spirit of a former occupant, a smoker, is trapped there and the smell will very often be in one particular area of the room where they used to sit and smoke. The smell of lavender, something associated with older people, is a frequently occurring one too. After I perform my healing and move the spirits on then the smells always disappear.
Everything going wrong
We all experience runs of bad luck but if everything is going wrong with no let up – job, relationships, finances – and you can trace it back to when you started living in your house, then there could be something else going on. You’ll likely feel unhappy at home and wish you’d never moved. It often starts with something small and then just keeps ramping up until I intervene and the house is healed.
You’re unhappy and lethargic
Feeling despondent and like you have no energy at home, yet your mood and energy lifts as soon as you step outside the door could mean there is a spirit trapped in your house that is influencing how you feel. Perhaps you dread being at home, and struggle to sleep in a way that you don’t when you’re away? It’s a sign something is amiss and there’s a presence that needs help in order to leave. They are beings that get ‘stuck’ between this life and the next – very often they don’t even know they’re stuck. They have a connection to the house or land and need to be persuaded that it’s time to leave.
Cold spots
Unexplained cold spots in an otherwise warm house is something I hear a lot from clients. It’s mostly in one particular area. It can be anywhere but very often it’s a living area where somebody used to sit. I recently encountered the spirit of a woman who would sit in a chair in the main sitting room of an old house and stare out of the window, waiting for her son who had been away fighting in a war to come home.

If your dog starts barking at a certain wall or corner of the room, that may be evidence of a ghostly presence
Unexplained noises and activity
Slamming doors, footsteps, banging and tapping are all noises that my clients report hearing and very often these noises occur at a specific time of the day or night, ruling out things like pipes or floorboards. Some get the physical sense of a presence too, someone brushing past them or the feel of a weight on them at night.
Electrical interference happens a lot as well. Electricity is an energy and the spirits can tap into that and communicate through it. Your lights might flicker or you’ll notice that the bulbs keep going even after they’ve just been changed. Radios, TVs and other appliances suddenly coming on is also another occurrence.
As alarming as some of these things sound, it’s important to remember that these spirits don’t want to scare or hurt you. It’s not like we see in horror films – they just want to be heard. They don’t realise they are stuck and could have been there hundreds of years. They just need intervention to move on.
Animals and children sensing something
Pets, especially dogs, and small children are much more sensitive and intuitive than adults. Clients will tell me that their dog will suddenly start barking at a wall or a corner of the room or that they won’t go into certain rooms at all.
When it comes to children they’ll often say they can see something in the room and they’ll describe it in such a detailed way that they couldn’t be making it up. Young children are far more connected as they’re purer and less affected by human influences.
