American expat admits she’s shocked she ‘never gets cat called’ walking past construction sites in Australia – but there’s a very simple explanation

  • Swimwear designer Sophia Kim shocked at Australians
  • She hasn’t been cat called in the street in Sydney
  • She says it happens every day when she is home in the US

A US woman has revealed her shock at not being cat called when walking past construction sites in Australia.

Sophia Kim, who is a US fashion designer living in Sydney, said it is ‘refreshing’ not to be leered at by workmen.

The glamorous 30-year-old has been in Australia for two years but only recently realised the absence of sexual harassments in the street.

‘I was walking past these construction workers and then I realised I never get cat called in Australia,’ she said.

‘No one is whistling, no one says anything disturbing. People just let me walk in peace here,’ she added.

She went on to say she has been to Queensland, Victoria and suburbs all over Sydney and has not been cat called once.

And while many Aussies put it down to them being ‘good people’ others said they refrained because they could get fired from their jobs for inappropriate behaviour.

‘They get fired on the spot if they do it here,’ one woman said.

‘My husband sent home an apprentice because he wouldn’t stop doing it, cancelled his contract on the same day and everything,’ another added.

One site manager agreed and said it is ‘super rare’ now.

‘I would tell them not to come again. Especially if it was a big job with lots of foot traffic,’ he said.

One man said he worked on a site where the boss catcalled.

‘I quit and haven’t seen it again or since,’ he said.

But some people had some disturbing claims of their own.

‘No they do cat call you, only when you are underage though,’ one woman said.

‘That’s true. I have only ever been cat called in my school uniform, years ago,’ said another.

‘I have experienced a lot in Sydney, all over, but it stopped when I turned 18,’ said another.

One woman said she thought cat calling was a myth, but Sophie explained people will even honk or yell things out of their car windows.

One man said that there are so many hot people in Australia’ there is no point cat calling as it would have to go on all day.
