Andy Samberg reflects on the intense pressure and physical toll of his time on Saturday Night Live (SNL) in a recent interview with Kevin Hart on the Peacock series Hart to Heart. Samberg revealed that the exhausting schedule eventually led him to a breaking point.

Physically, it was taking a heavy toll on me, and I got to a place where I hadn’t slept in seven years basically
, shared Samberg. He joined SNL in 2005, primarily contributing viral digital shorts along with musical sketches during his eight seasons on the show.
The Strain of Being an SNL Star
On the most recent episode of Hart to Heart, Samberg discussed the personal sacrifices he made for his career. It was a big choice. For me, it was like, I can’t actually endure it anymore. But I didn’t want to leave
, he added.
Despite achieving viral success with digital shorts like ‘I’m On a Boat’ and ‘Dick in a Box’, the constant grind took a significant toll on his well-being.
Impact of Digital Shorts
Samberg’s digital shorts were some of the most memorable pieces from his tenure at SNL. Working alongside his collaborators Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer from The Lonely Island, they produced hits that resonated with millions. Reflecting on their creative partnership, Samberg said, I was basically left in charge of making the shorts, which I never pretended like I could do without them. We made stuff I’m really proud of in my last two years, but there’s something about the songs that I can only do with Akiva and Jorm. It’s just how it is; we’re just a band in that way
.

The Decision to Leave
The combination of creative pressure and lack of sleep became unsustainable for Samberg. Physically, it was taking a heavy toll on me, and I got to a place where I hadn’t slept in seven years
, he admitted. With Taccone and Schaffer no longer part of SNL’s writing team, much of the responsibility fell on him.
Despite these challenges, Samberg remained grateful for the experience and the lifelong friendships he formed. Hosting an episode in 2014 marked his ongoing bond with SNL.
The Support Network
Samberg has always credited his colleagues and friends for their support throughout his career. In 2020, he reflected on their enduring bond: I think I speak for all three of us—the things that we’re the proudest of, and that seem to be the things that people bring up to us over the years, are always the things we’ve made together
. This sense of camaraderie has influenced every step of his journey.
A New Chapter
Married to musician Joanna Newsom, and now a father to their daughter, Andy Samberg’s departure from SNL marks not an end but a new beginning for this talented artist.
