Balenciaga's newest bag is raising eyebrows. The Marché Packable Tote Bag (pictured) looks remarkably like a basic plastic bag from your average supermarket - but costs almost £800

Balenciaga is selling a tote that looks remarkably like a basic plastic bag from your average supermarket or retail store.

The Spanish fashion house’s product even includes crinkles to look well-worn, despite being brand new.

While most supermarket bags are made from polyethylene, this version is composed of polyamide and Dyneema said to be the ‘world’s strongest fibre’.

The Marché Packable Tote Bag Medium is currently available for pre-order as part of the brand’s Winter 2025 collection.

It has the company’s logo printed on the front and also includes two addresses for its Paris stores, plus website details.

Although Balenciaga was started in Spain, its headquarters are in the French city of love – but the blue bag is actually made in Italy.

It has two handles and an inner flat pocket that allows you to pack it ‘into a pouch’ – but it will set buyers back a staggering £775.

According to Balenciaga, the bag can be used to hold all your essentials, from your smartphone to a laptop that weighs maximum 10kg.

If you ordered it today, the Marché would arrive by 21 October, but it’ll set you back a handsome sum.

The Marche tote caught the eye of some shoppers who were quick to share their confusion online.

‘A plastic bag that resembles a plastic bag,’ one user joked and another quipped: ‘I hate it’.

This isn’t the first time Spanish fashion house Balenciaga has presented shoppers with a bizarre product.

Last month, the brand was criticised for flogging ‘tatty’ Puma trainers for 10 times as much.

The trendy fashion house collaborated with the sportswear giant to offer its own take on the Speedcat sneakers for £520.

The shoes had a ‘distressed’ look with part of the Puma markings peeled off and a few fake, grubby bits on them.

However, customers found almost identical trainers being sold by Puma for just £55.

One shopper said: ‘You could have the Puma Speedcats for £55. “Or the exact same shoe but ruined for 10 times the price.”‘

Last year, Balenciaga hit headlines after charging £1,150 for a pair of tights full of holes and ladders.

The luxury fashion brand’s ‘destroyed tights’ cost £400 more than their unblemished counterparts, which only set you back £725.

The tights, which were made in Italy, were advertised on the brand’s website as ‘technical knit’ with a ‘destroyed effect’ and contrasted double fabric.

Several holes were cut into the both of the leggings of the tights, which were available in both black and light beige.
