Billy Donovan’s uncertain future in Chicago is quickly becoming the next pivot point in the Bulls’ rebuild as UNC enters the picture.

The Chicago Bulls could be headed for a major organizational shift, and it may start on the sidelines. On Tuesday, North Carolina fired head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons, triggering a high-profile coaching search. According to multiple reports, Bulls head coach Billy Donovan has emerged as an early name connected to the vacancy, creating ripple effects for both programs at a critical moment.

The timing matters. Chicago sits at 29-42, 12th in the Eastern Conference, and outside the postseason picture. Meanwhile, North Carolina, one of college basketball’s most prestigious programs, is searching for a reset after an early NCAA Tournament exit. That intersection has placed Donovan squarely in the spotlight.

Growing momentum points to Donovan stepping away

Even before North Carolina’s opening, there were signs that Donovan’s future in Chicago was uncertain. Reports from the Chicago Sun-Times indicate internal belief is building around a potential departure at the end of the season.

“There’s been growing momentum around the building that Donovan could step away from the mess and take a season to reevaluate what he wants from the profession,” Joe Cowley reported. “It would make sense considering how emotional the year has been for the Hall of Famer, losing both his father and mother-in-law within weeks of each other.”

That context matters. Donovan is not simply navigating another losing season. He’s managing personal loss while leading a roster that has struggled to compete at a high level. The Bulls have made the playoffs just once during his tenure, a first-round exit in 2022. They have not built the type of contender expected from a coach with his résumé.

Additionally, the roster limitations have become increasingly clear. Chicago has not had a top-tier superstar, and the franchise’s inability to draft near the top has capped its ceiling. Even as Donovan has maintained professionalism, league insiders suggest frustration has grown behind the scenes.

College basketball analyst Jeff Goodman added another layer, pointing to feedback from Donovan’s inner circle as pressure mounts.

“The Bulls stink, we know that. He’s got a lucrative contract with the Bulls right now. [Jerry Reinsdorf] has been very loyal to him. I think in turn, he will be loyal to Reinsdorf, but, however, there are a ton of people in Billy Donovan’s circle right now that have told Billy Donovan, ‘Get the hell out of there. Get out of there. You can’t win with what they’ve given you,’” Goodman said.

UNC presents a legacy reset opportunity

If Donovan does leave Chicago, North Carolina offers a compelling alternative. The program provides something the Bulls currently cannot: a clear path to contention and control.

Donovan’s college resume speaks for itself. At Florida, he built a powerhouse and won back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007. Returning to that environment would allow him to reestablish his identity as a program builder rather than a coach navigating roster limitations. Goodman framed the opportunity as both competitive and a reputation boost.

“So go to Carolina and have a chance to win the whole thing again and change your legacy a little bit from being a coach in the NBA that just hasn’t had enough to win at a high level,” Goodman added.

As a coach with a track record for player development, even in this new NIL era of college sports, Donovan’s background could be a strong draw for top recruits. When paired with the established mystique of North Carolina basketball, Donovan could get back to his championship winning ways within just a few years.

What it means for Chicago’s rebuild

However, the situation is not entirely straightforward. Reports indicate Donovan may not be fully committed to the UNC job. Some suggest he could explore other college opportunities or even step away temporarily. At the same time, North Carolina’s outreach signals real interest in evaluating NBA experience as part of its search.

Still, the appeal is obvious. A blue-blood program, major resources, and a national platform create an environment where Donovan could compete for championships immediately.

For the Bulls, his potential departure would mark more than a coaching change. It would represent the next phase of a full reset. Over the past two years, Chicago has already detached from its previous core, moving on from Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Nikola Vucevic, Alex Caruso, Coby White, and Ayo Dosunmu.

Donovan’s decision now looms as the next domino. Whether he steps away, takes a college job, or stays in Chicago, the outcome will help define the direction of a franchise still searching for clarity.
