Browns cornerback Greg Newsome suffered a shoulder injury during camp.
The Cleveland Browns have been hit with another blow to their secondary, as cornerback Greg Newsome is now sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Newsome, a former first-round pick, stepped into a starting role after Martin Emerson Jr. suffered a season-ending Achilles tear during training camp. However, Newsome is now expected to miss time due to a left shoulder injury. The team has not provided a definitive timeline for his return.
“He’s really day-to-day with that shoulder,” coach Kevin Stefanski said on Saturday.
It’s unfortunate for Newsome, who is trying to establish himself on the outside following the injury to Emerson. Newsome has spent most of the past few seasons as the team’s nickel cornerback. He had dealt with injuries in previous training camps and was looking forward to a healthy start to the year.
“It was terrible,” Newsome said of being injured to start last season. “You know what I’m saying? I don’t think people understand just getting thrown out there in a league with the best athletes in the world, not having a chance to really prepare, go through this, build the calloused. So I’m super excited that I’ve been out here getting better each day and I’m super excited for this season.”
Greg Newsome Entering Contract Year With Browns
Newsome is entering a pivotal contract year, with the final season of his rookie deal underway. A strong showing alongside Pro Bowler Denzel Ward could pave the way for a significant extension. Newsome has been vocal about his desire to stay in Cleveland long-term.
“I’ve said it since the day I was drafted, I want to be a Brown for life, and in order to do that, I’ve got to hold my end of the bargain,” Newsome said. “I’ve got to go back to being that player that I know I can be. The good thing is I’m starting this training camp healthy so I’m able to get out there and get the reps in before the season starts and that’s my main goal. It’s always been my goal to be a Brown for life.”
Newsome acknowledged the unfortunate circumstances that led to his expanded role and made sure to recognize Emerson’s impact on and off the field following the injury.
“He’s a huge piece of our defense, but just as being a brother to me it’s bigger than the game of football,” Newsome said Wednesday. “A guy that I’ve seen since the offseason started, been putting in a lot of work, been one of the last guys to leave the building every single day. A guy that just brings passion, energy, I’m going to definitely miss him out there as a brother. I’m going to miss him every single snap. I definitely feel for him, but I know he’ll get through this and he’ll be back to his form.”
Browns Held Out Myles Garrett for Precautionary Reasons
Newsome was not the only key piece of the Browns’ defense missing from Saturday’s practice. The team also held out All-Pro pass-rusher Myles Garrett on Saturday for what Stefanski dubbed as “precautionary rest.” The Browns had an off day on Sunday.
“Just taking care of him,” Stefanski said of Garrett.
Garrett is the centerpiece of the defense and recently signed a new four-year extension that averages $40 million per year and includes $123 million guaranteed.
The Browns are going to kick things up a gear this week as they prepare for their first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on August 8.
