The Cleveland Browns have responded to Shedeur Sanders’ recent troubles.
The Cleveland Browns have addressed the recent speeding tickets issued to rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Sanders, who is competing for a roster spot in a crowded quarterback room, was cited twice in recent weeks, including for driving 101 mph in a 60 mph zone after midnight on June 17.
“He is taking care of the tickets,” Browns chief communication officer Peter John-Baptiste said, per cleveland.com.
Sanders, a fifth-round pick out of Colorado, faces an uphill climb as he battles veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, along with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, for a role. The speeding citations brought unwanted attention as Sanders tries to build trust and establish himself in Cleveland.
Sanders responded to the blowback over the speeding tickets in a short video posted on social media from David Njoku’s celebrity softball game on Thursday.
“I’m just a little boy,” Sanders said, smiling. “I’ve made some wrong choices, personally, I can own up to them. I’ve made some not great choices. I learn from it.”
Speeding Tickets Rare Misstep for Shedeur Sanders in Cleveland
The speeding tickets marked a rare misstep for Sanders since his arrival in Cleveland. The rookie quarterback, once projected as an early first-round pick, was selected at No. 144 overall in the fifth round of the draft amid concerns about his character, among other factors.
But since joining the Browns, Sanders has shown poise, maturity, and a positive outlook — qualities that have drawn praise from both coaches and veteran teammates.
“I think everyone was surprised to see him go to the fifth round, but he’s come to camp and OTAs with a great attitude,” Browns star Myles Garrett said recently. “He’s a hard-working guy; he has a great head on his shoulders. And, you know, he’s always positive, always optimistic, always keeps a smile on his face, and you like going to work with people who have that kind of attitude.”
Browns head coach, Kevin Stefanski, has also praised Sanders for his work ethic.
“Shedeur is a great kid,” Stefanski said during a recent interview with ESPN Cleveland. “He is working like crazy, like all the guys. My office is downstairs. They got to walk by my office when they come in. They get in early. Shedeur, just like all those guys, is in there early, getting his work done. He’s working really hard. I like everything about Shedeur.”
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Focused on ‘Small Things’
“My goal is to be the best teammate and to be as polished as I can be in every aspect,” Sanders said during minicamp. “I view things as I got time. I got time to be able to grow and mature and be able to understand the ins and outs of the defenses and be able to get the good insight from the vets in the room.
“So, I look at it as a plus. I got time to actually be able to really have a great understanding. Whenever it’s time for me to play, then it’s time for me to play. But I’m not looking too far in the future about all that. I’m looking [at] every day in practice. … I’m focused on the small things and over time the big things will happen.”
Sanders will look to put the off-field missteps behind him as he prepares for training camp. Browns rookies will report to camp on July 18.
