Chiefs All-In Trade Pitch Flips Draft Haul for Browns' Myles Garrett

The Kansas City Chiefs own two first-round picks in this year’s NFL draft, including one inside the top 10, but there is at least one current player in the league worth both assets — plus more.

Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett asked for a trade from the Cleveland Browns approximately one year ago. Instead, the team signed him to a $160 million extension. However, recent developments indicate that Garrett is gearing up again to force his way out of Northeast Ohio.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs have addressed some of their major roster issues by adding running back Kenneth Walker III and defensive tackle/run-stopper Khyiris Tonga in free agency, as well as bringing superstar tight end Travis Kelce back for at least one more year.

Kansas City still requires help off the edge and in the cornerback room, while a right tackle and a wide receiver are also high on the list of needs. Thus, dumping two first-round picks in the same draft, even for a player like Garrett, might be too much too quickly.

But if the Chiefs could get in the mix by sending the Browns picks No. 9 and 40 in 2026, as well as their first-rounder in 2027, that is a price that might be worth paying for literally the best defensive player in football.

Field Yates of ESPN reported on Wednesday, March 25 that Cleveland and Garrett agreed to a change in the language of his contract, which defers payment each season and opens up a trade window.

Jack Duffin of the Orange and Brown Report, who studies and writes about Cleveland’s salary cap machinations for the website, said that can only mean one thing.

“Garrett wants out, seems like they are going to give it to him later in the offseason,” Duffin wrote. “No real reason to do it otherwise.”

Over The Cap wrote published a detailed explanation of the contract changes on Wednesday.

“The Browns and star [edge]-rusher Myles Garrett have agreed to a modified contract where the two sides have agreed to push back the option dates in his contract from late March to early September,” OTC wrote. “This is a pretty bizarre move on Garrett’s end as it defers the payment of salary each year to Garrett and really just opens up a trade window each year, except Garrett has a no-trade provision. It is hard to really tell what the logic is here from either side.”

Chiefs Can Trade for Myles Garrett, Fill Out Roster Later in NFL Draft, Free Agency

Garrett turns 31 years old in December and broke the NFL’s single-season record with 23 sacks last year. He also put up a league-leading 33 tackles for loss, topping the NFL in that category for the second consecutive campaign.

The Browns’ defensive end is a seven-time Pro Bowler and seven-time All-Pro over his nine-year career. He would more than solidify the Chiefs’ edge-rush needs and the defensive front as a whole after the addition of Tonga.

Kansas City could draft the best cornerback available at pick No. 29 and fill in the rest of the roster holes through six selections between Rounds 3-6 and third-wave free agency moves — perhaps including a reunion with wideout Tyreek Hill, whom the Miami Dolphins released this offseason.

The aforementioned proposed trade for Garrett would represent an all-in move for Kansas City in 2026, while also pairing Garrett and two-time MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes through at least 2030.
