James Erdman III is testifying today before the US Senate Homeland Security Committee, and he is blowing the whistle on the CIA’s willingness to bow to Dr. Anthony Fauci’s insistence that COVID did not originate in lab leak, likely tied to gain-of-function research.
No surprise there, I have to say. At the time, the CIA agreed to withhold its conclusion that the most likely explanation for COVID’s spread was a lab leak, although it has subsequently stated that the lab leak was likely.

CIA managers retaliated against analysts who refused to go along with the middle-of-the-night rewrite that buried the lab leak conclusion.
Wow.
This tale, as far as I can tell, is more about the willingness of bureaucracies to cooperate to cover up their own role in disasters than the CIA’s participation in causing this particular one. There is no indication that it played any role itself, but rather that it bowed to political pressure from Fauci et al to cover up their own.

That cover-up had massive implications, though, that go far beyond the mere fact that Fauci and company were trying to hide their not-so-minor “Oops.” It became the basis for a massive, politically motivated smear campaign that poisoned our politics. Out of this cover-up came the deplatforming of millions of Americans, the smearing of Republicans for the political benefit of the Democrats, and the gaslighting of Americans and citizens around the world.

Anthony Fauci controlled tens of billions of dollars of research money and used that pile of cash as his personal piggy bank to distort science, conduct illegal research, manipulate public health policies, and conduct a personal foreign policy with regard to China, and to reward corruption in science by directing grant money to co-conspirators.
Not to mention that he funded the likely source of a virus that killed tens of millions. Don’t forget that.

The CIA is blowing its top, attacking Rand Paul and Erdman for conducting a political stunt, although it’s not exactly clear what they are disputing. It’s certainly not the basic facts of the accusations, but rather that they are being aired publicly and not behind closed doors. Read their statement, and it is all about process, not denying the specific allegations.

This is a perfect bureaucratic response. It is all about covering their own rear ends, which apparently matters more than whether the US government funded the creation of a virus that killed millions, distorted our politics, helped get a senile president elected, permanently ruined the lives of millions of children who will never catch up in their learning, transferred trillions of dollars in wealth from small business to mega-corporations, and sparked a massive inflationary spiral that impoverished millions.
And that’s just in the United States. Poorer countries had it much worse. There are people in Africa who have been climbing out of poverty who will never recover.

The CIA scandal is more about how the Deep State protects itself than about malfeasance by government officials. They don’t lie solely to do horrific things; they lie to help each other out when others do horrific things. It is totally amoral, if unsurprising.
In government, the only people held accountable are those who violate the tribe’s norms, which are all about self-advancement.

Liberals portray government as the answer to the power of massive corporations, but they are the biggest, baddest, most corrupt institution on the block.
I have to say, I admire whistleblowers not just for their willingness to break with their tribe, but even more so because they know they will be destroyed by those who expose them. We all know accountability will not come. Fauci will never see a day in jail.
Joe Biden saw to that, though it’s unlikely anyone would have faced the music anyway. Fauci is being showered with praise and money, much of which still comes out of our pockets.
The system will protect itself. It will heap rewards on the worst people, because to do otherwise would leave everybody exposed.
Sunlight on the problem is mildly satisfying, but the media and the institutions will continue to praise and reward, while Erdman will no doubt pay a high price for our momentary satisfaction. It’s not nothing.
But it’s not enough.
