If you’ve spent most of winter bundled up in a knee-length black puffer coat, you’re not alone. It has become essential cold-weather armour for most of the women (and men) I know, whether they’re early-morning dog walking, commuting or spectating on a windy sports field.

But it’s time to look ahead to when we’ll emerge from our thermal padded cocoons. Spring isn’t here yet, but it’s coming – and we’ll need to shed those Arsène Wenger-inspired waterproofs. So, what to wear next? These are the cosy new layers to covet once you’ve packed away your puffer and we inch towards warmer days.

THE TRENCH 2.0

While it’s likely you already have a classic version, this new take on the trench is all about standing out from the beige brigade with styles in check, indigo denim, contrasting dual tones and shades such as olive or khaki green. Most styles hit the knee or mid-shin length, but don’t be afraid to go a little shorter if you’re petite, while a slightly oversized fit will leave room for your woolly layers. Whatever you choose, the fun twists on this classic piece will make downpours a little bit jollier.

THE CITY COAT

No longer reserved for trading titans and bankers, smart maxi-length city coats have been given the seal of approval for wear beyond the boardroom. On the front row the style set wear theirs over miniskirts, with power pins on show in sheer black tights and pointed-toe heels. But you can throw one over a jumper and chunky walking boots and still look effortlessly cool, as the smart feel of these double-breasted overcoats makes them a great tool for elevating everyday outfits. So whether you wear yours to an important meeting or while walking the pooch, you’ll look the business.

THE FUNNEL NECK

Among fashion editors, this statement detail is coined the ‘Phoebe Philo funnel’, named after the former Celine designer who showed this elegant cut in her first eponymous collection in October 2023. There’s no need for a scarf here, as the jaw-high stiff collar will shield your neck from wind, rain or both. The funnel detail is also brilliant for disguising crepey skin – think of it as anti-ageing outerwear.

THE BARN JACKET

Last year this posh country layer snuck its way into Fashion Week, then onto the high street. Now it’s back – only in denim and vinyl-esque fabrics, and in poppy colours rather than classic khaki or black. Just avoid wearing yours with Dubarry boots or overalls – you don’t want to look like you’ve just been in the chicken coop.
