The Dallas Cowboys have made some quality moves in NFL free agency so far, but Jerry Jones has yet to pull off a blockbuster addition.
As of right now, the headliner move of the offseason for the Cowboys has been the trade to acquire Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. To bring Gary onboard, Dallas only had to give up a 2027 fourth-round pick.
Outside of the Gary addition, the Cowboys have also signed veteran safety Jalen Thompson, safety P.J. Locke, cornerback Cobie Durant, and defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia, among other moves.
With that being said, Dallas still has areas of need that must be addressed. One of those needs comes at inside linebacker.
Thankfully, there are still some good options available for the Cowboys to consider. Bobby Wagner has been consistently linked as a potential target for Dallas and that link has been made once again.
Dallas Cowboys Continue Being Linked to Free Agent LB Bobby Wagner
Randy Gurzi of On SI has named Wagner as a potential “bargain” free agent the team could target. The 10-time Pro Bowler would undoubtedly bring a major improvement to the team’s linebacker position.
“Wagner wouldn’t be a long-term answer, but he would be an ideal starter in the middle of the defense,” Gurzi wrote. “He would also serve as an excellent mentor for some of the younger players on the roster, especially if the Cowboys land a linebacker in the NFL draft.”
Even at 35 years old, Wagner is a highly productive linebacker. He is coming off of a 2025 season with the NFC East rival Washington Commanders that saw him play in 17 games. Wagner recorded 162 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, and four defended passes.
Throughout his career, Wagner has consistently been one of the best linebackers in the NFL. Whether it be on a one or two-year deal, the Cowboys should strongly consider pursuing him.
Jerry Jones Still Has Plenty of Avenues to Improve the Roster
At this point in time, Dallas still has around $20 million of cap space to work with. Wagner has been projected to have a market value of around $7.7 million by Spotrac.
Outside of spending money in free agency or pursuing talent via the trade market, the Cowboys also have the 2026 NFL Draft coming up. Due to the Micah Parsons trade with the Packers last offseason, Dallas has an extra first-round pick.
Jones will have both the No. 12 and No. 20 overall selections in the first round. The Cowboys should be able to find two quality players with those picks.
Along with the two first-round selections, Dallas holds the No. 92 overall pick in the third round, the No. 112 pick in the fourth round, the No. 152, No. 177, and No. 180 picks in the fifth round, and the No. 218 overall pick in the seventh round.
Expect to see the Cowboys remain active this offseason. They have made some solid moves, but Jones won’t rest until he feels that the team is a legitimate Super Bowl contender for the 2026 season.
