Dodgers Give Massive Tanner Scott Injury Update

Tanner Scott reacts as he leaves the game with medical staff during the ninth inning against the Minnesota Twins at Dodger Stadium.

The Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen can not catch a break this season. After spending over $100 million in the offseason on three arms to ensure their bullpen wouldn’t be a problem, it’s been the exact opposite. Michael Kopech is dealing with a right knee issue, and Blake Treinen has yet to throw one inning this season. Evan Phillips has also been lost for the season due to Tommy John Surgery.

Now, in Monday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, Tanner Scott had to be removed from the game in the ninth inning with the trainer, and was seen biting his glove walking off. Scott signed a four-year, $72 million deal with Los Angeles in the offseason. After the game, Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts revealed to the media that Scott was feeling “emotionally unwell”, which is never good to hear from a manager talking about a player like Scott.

Scott Being Sent to the Injured List

Roberts announced before Tuesday’s game that Scott is being sent to the 15-Day Injured List with a left forearm injury. He received an MRI on Tuesday, and the team is still awaiting results. However, Roberts said Scott is “in a better spot” than yesterday.

Scott marks the ninth Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher currently on the IL. However, the front office has already acknowledged that they will likely target bullpen reinforcements at the trade deadline, which is just nine days away.

Scott Has Struggled This Season

Although Scott has not been as effective as the Los Angeles Dodgers had hoped, if he has to get Tommy John surgery, that would certainly be a big blow to the bullpen and pitching staff, which has already had to deal with several pitching injuries.  The Dodgers rank 24th in Major League Baseball in bullpen ERA, with a mark of 4.35. After posting a career-best 1.75 ERA with both the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres last season in 72 innings, things have not been as easy for Scott this season. In 45.2 innings, Scott has a 4.14 ERA. His BB/9 and H/9 are at similar marks to last season, but he has just been missing in the zone much more frequently this season.

In 2024, Scott gave up just three home runs all season. This year, he’s given up eight long balls in about half the number of innings.

On top of that, he has seven blown saves, which leads MLB.

No doubt still a big loss for the Dodgers, who hope to repeat as World Series Champions. The Dodgers are in desperate need of good injury news, but they may be getting some soon with starter Blake Snell presumably returning to a big league mound soon, and the same deal with Treinen. The Dodgers are built for October, but with all these injuries looming further into the regular season, it raises big questions about the pitching staff as the calendar is about to turn to August.
