Dress code, co-chairs announced for Karl Lagerfeld theme

The 2023 Met Gala will have fans levitating.

On Wednesday, Vogue announced the celebrities who will host the fashionable red carpet as well as the official dress code for the May 1 event, which will honor the late Karl Lagerfeld.

Anna Wintour has chosen Dua Lipa, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer and Michaela Coel to join her as co-hosts for the evening, which will celebrate Lagerfeld’s work for Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, Balmain and his eponymous brands.

The accompanying exhibition, titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” will feature 150 looks designed by Lagerfeld across his illustrious career, curated by Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s Curator in Charge, and longtime Lagerfeld collaborator Amanda Harlech, who is serving as the exhibition’s creative consultant.

Fittingly, the dress code is simple: “in honor of Karl.”

While plenty of stars have previously sported Chanel on the Met Gala red carpet — including Anna Wintour, who was a dear friend of Lagerfeld’s and almost exclusively wore his designs to the major event — Cruz will no doubt wear a dazzling Chanel number as longtime muse and face of the brand.

The “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” actress even made her runway debut for Chanel after the designer’s 2019 death.

It remains to be seen whether guests will wear Lagerfeld originals from throughout his nearly seven-decade-long career, current looks from Chanel (which is now designed by Virginie Viard, who was Lagerfeld’s right-hand woman at the house) or even outfits simply inspired by the fashion legend, who was famous for his black-and-white attire, fingerless gloves and powdered white ponytail.

Perhaps one brave soul will channel Lagerfeld’s beloved feline, Choupette — or the cat could potentially make an appearance herself.

Roger Federer and wife
Recently retired tennis great Roger Federer is close friends with Wintour, with the Vogue editor-in-chief even calling him her “hero” in a longform article about the athlete.
