'If I offend people, I'm sorry': Tom Grennan, 27, has apologised for his 'inappropriate' comment at the BRIT Awards as he revealed his favourite track from his upcoming album

Tom Grennan apologised for his ‘inappropriate’ comment at the BRIT Awards as he revealed his favourite track from his upcoming album and hopes to win.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline at The Rockstar Energy Press Play Pre-Party at Lock91 in Manchester, the musician, 27, reflected on the moment he shared with good friend Ellie Goulding, adding ‘there was no excuse.’

As he looks forward to the release of his third album What Ifs & Maybes, Tom gave an exclusive insight into a new song, Head Up, and joked that next time he hope’s to be on stage winning a coveted award, rather than presenting one.

Tom received backlash from fans following an awkward joke about Ellie’s breasts on stage, which he has now admitted his ‘gut feeling’ warned him against saying.

The singer said that being asked to hand over a BRIT award ‘was an honour’ as he recalled the moment he stepped up to the podium.

He explained: ‘Ellie Goulding is a good friend of mine, we had a laugh. You know, there’s no excuse for it, but between us we were like, “Should we say this?” and we were like, “Yeah f*** it we’ll say it” but it didn’t go to plan.

‘If I offended people, I’ve apologised for it. I don’t think like that and I’m not a crude person. But me and Ellie spoke about it before.

‘In my gut feeling I thought, “I don’t know how this is going to be received”, but because we’re mates and Ellie said, “Yeah, why don’t we say that”, I was like, “Cool!” But my gut right!

‘What I should have said was “This will be the only time I hold a BRIT tonight!” before he added: ‘Next time I want to be up there winning one.’

Tom’s new album What Ifs & Maybes is set for release in June this year and as he gets ready to head out on tour, he revealed which song he’s looking forward to playing.

‘I’m most excited to play a new song called head up, it’s not out yet,’ he said.

‘The lyrics are: “You keep my head up, above the water, some times it feels like you’re fighting the tide, scared to fall in love with the person you found, but I met love and she keeps my head up.”‘

‘It’s all about just being happy being able to say “I’m good with where I’m at and I can swim in the deep end.”

He continued: ‘The new album is different because it’s the best body of work that I have ever put out, my songs are better, my pen has got better. I try to always level up with how I write songs and put songs together.

‘It’s got a completely different feel to what Evering Road was. That was a love story, that went bad.

‘This one is about spontaneity, it’s about putting yourself in places where you might feel uncomfortable and to feel comfortable in them surroundings instead. Every day I am living in this world where it’s quite uncomfortable and it’s not normal but I like that because it helps me grow.

‘I just want people to listen to this album and have the belief in themselves that they can do whatever they want to do and be whoever they want to be, a door way for people to be like, “Life’s alright and I’m the owner of my own destiny.”

‘I want everyone to have a party and to smile and not be crying over things, especially when they listen to songs, I want my songs to feel joyful.’

‘She’s hit me up about tickets. I’m a massive fan of her, a grew up watching her,’ Tom explained.

The Rockstar Energy Press Play celebrated the switch moment between work and play that can make or break the night ahead.

‘Rockstar is about pressing play on your playlist. I had a can before I went on stage and now I’m ready for anything. It’s about having a good time, no need for negativity.’
