First GOP presidential hopeful heads to Texas to see Biden's border crisis up close – HotAir

GOP presidential primary candidate Nikki Haley is heading to the southern border. She is the first declared candidate to plan a trip to see firsthand the Biden border crisis. Also on the trip will be Rep. Tony Gonzales, a congressman from Texas who has been working tirelessly on trying to get the Biden administration to take border security seriously. Gonzales represents the San Antonio and Uvalde areas of Texas.

Nikki Haley has gubernatorial experience as well as diplomatic experience to bring to the table when discussing border security. Former governors make good presidents because of the range of experiences they accumulate in that job. In this case, Haley has some suggestions on immigration reform and securing the border, including redirecting money allocated by Biden to hire 87,000 IRS agents. Instead of IRS agents, the money would be used to hire 25,000 additional border agents. That’s a good start.

Yes, I know that President Trump made several trips to the southern border to monitor the situation. He was able to secure the border better than most presidents have been able to do. However, he has not gone to the border since declaring his candidacy last November. It’s kind of surprising he has not gone to the southern border, frankly, as it would be a logical thing for him to do. He ran on the issue of illegal immigration and border security in 2015 and it would be easy for him to tout his success on the border. It would be a no-brainer to shame Biden for his utter lack of attention to the border crisis he created. Haley and Gonzales will make stops between San Antonio and Eagle Pass. These are areas most affected by heavy migrant traffic in recent years.

Haley’s plan requires businesses to use E-verify, a program used during the hiring process to verify U.S. citizenship in applicants or their immigration status. This is where her experience as governor comes into play. Haley signed a bill requiring all businesses in South Carolina to use E-verify. She also signed a bill as governor that followed Arizona’s lead which requires police to check immigration status during routine stops. Critics call that a “show-me-your-papers” stop.

Haley, if she becomes president, is vowing to cut funding to states that have been used to give money to people in the U.S. illegally. An example of this practice is in New York, where billions were dolled out to illegal immigrant workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

During a Fox News interview earlier this month, Haley said: ‘We fix [the border crisis] by going back to Remain-in-Mexico, we fix it by stopping catch and release, we fix it by putting up an actual wall and closing our border.’

‘But we do it by doing what I did in South Carolina as governor,’ she added.

‘We did a mandatory E-Verify program that said none of our businesses could hire anyone that was in this country illegally. That is what got them out of South Carolina because there were no jobs for them to come to, that’s what will get them out of this country, we’ve got to make sure none of our businesses hire anyone that is here in the country illegally, and we’ve got to start taking this seriously. Every state is a border state.’

Every state is a border state now, thanks to the Biden border crisis. DHS has bused or flown illegal aliens to every state, and every congressional district in the country. Biden’s plan to create chaos on the southern border is succeeding and spreading across the country. Communities are on the hook for providing services for them, often without advance notice that they are coming. The Biden border crisis is intentional, that much is clear. Otherwise, Joe Biden would not have signed executive orders and memos that put a stop to programs and agreements made by the previous administration that were successful in securing the border. It’s as simple as that.

Good for Nikki Haley. She should go to the border and make headlines for doing so. She can shine a spotlight on an issue that will be an important one in the 2024 presidential election, whether Joe Biden wants it to be or not.
