You may have noticed by now that far-left progressives seem to shift their focus to something new every few months. You wouldn’t necessarily think there was a direct path from support for the Green New Deal to chanting “Death to America” in Tehran, but for some young leftists one thing leads to another.
Yesterday the Free Press published a lengthy story about the poster girl for this sort of left-wing extremism. Her name is Calla Walsh and a few years ago she was a well-regarded youth activist working on campaigns for national democrats.
Walsh studied at two elite Boston preparatory schools, Shady Hill and Winsor, and quickly became a sort of local star for her politicking. At 15, she helped mobilize thousands of young Bostonians to take part in an international Climate Strike at City Hall, and at 17 was one of the youngest delegates at the Democratic Socialist of America’s National Convention…
It was Senator Ed Markey’s 2020 reelection bid that elevated Walsh’s profile nationally. Polls showed the septuagenarian trailing the 39-year-old Joe Kennedy III by as many as 16 points. The age gap and the Kennedy mystique appeared to many pollsters as too much for Markey to overcome.
Walsh and a network of hundreds of young, progressive online activists, who became known as the Markeyverse, changed the course of the race. They used social media to mobilize young voters, casting Markey as the leading Democrat fighting climate change and corporate corruption…
A platinum blonde Walsh canvassed Boston neighborhoods in a Green New Deal T-shirt and face mask. Markey won the 2020 Democratic primary by 11 points and praised Walsh and her allies. Glowing profiles appeared in The New York Times and Boston magazine. “It’s a movement fueled by young people who are not afraid to raise their voices or make enemies,” Markey said after the vote.
Walsh would later claim she was groomed by an older campaign worker when she was just 17. She turned her back on traditional politics and started making trips to Cuba.
“I had started to unlearn a lot of the imperialist propaganda that I realized I’d been absorbing my entire life,” Walsh told a progressive Boston-area church in late 2022, many of whose congregants also participated in Brigadista trips to Cuba.
The trip was organized by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, which is known by its Spanish acronym, ICAP. Cohen and a number of U.S. officials I talked to said that ICAP is closely enmeshed in Cuba’s intelligence agencies and has been actively recruiting foreign agents and government propagandists for decades.
She came back from these trips writing about the glories of the revolution and attacking the “U.S. empire.” By 2023 her revolutionary views escalated after she met Fergie Chambers. Chambers is a very wealthy trust fund kid turned Marxist whose stated goal has been the destruction of the United States.
After the 10/7 attack on Israel by Hamas, Walsh became a campaigner against Israel and organized protests of Elbit systems, a company that manufactures weapons.
On the morning of November 20, Walsh, Belanger, and two other women descended on the facility just as Elbit’s 650 workers were starting their workday. Walsh and two of her comrades scaled a ladder to the roof of the facility and began attacking skylights and a ventilation system with hammers, while dumping red paint on the front sign of the building and scrawling anti-Israeli graffiti. They posted photos to Instagram of the three of them standing on the roof in their balaclavas.
Walsh was arrested and in 2024 pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal which only resulted in 60 days in jail. Since her release she has been more focused on defending Iran. In fact, contrary to her protest at Elbit, Walsh has recently helped create pro-Iranian propaganda praising their “indigenous” missile systems.

Walsh routinely praises violence. She was thrilled about the murder of Charlie Kirk, for instance.

She’s also a co-founder of Unity of Fields, an X account that openly supports “armed resistance” against Israel and the United States.
Walsh recently moved to Beirut and now seems to have a job appearing on Iran’s Press TV:
“We have to continue to get our word out there,” Walsh told an Iranian talk show host while in Tehran last summer. “And we also need to be creative with how we disseminate ideas, because increasingly the censorship is only going to get worse.”
Walsh’s new role as Tehran’s Gen Z propagandist has her regularly appearing on Iranian state media with other outcasts from Europe and North America. In December, Walsh was a guest on a Press TV show called Palestine Declassified, with two Britons who have been banished from UK politics and academia in recent years for antisemitism. She set up a camera from her Beirut apartment to tape the show and extol the military prowess of the late Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani, whom the U.S. assassinated in a 2020 drone strike.
Walsh is not happy about the Free Press article about her. She posted this response on X yesterday. The point she’s making is pretty interesting:
I refused to speak with the fascists at “The Free Press,” who should be sent to the Hague for complicity in genocide and assassinating Dr. Refaat Al-Areer, so they had an undercover reporter track me down in Beirut and meet me under false premises.

The enemy press, which makes virtually no distinction between itself and the national security state, tries to paint me as an eccentric and pathological exception, instead of admitting the more dangerous truth: that I’m a microcosm of a broader pattern, of some youth in the imperial core identifying more with the brave anti-imperialist mujahideen of the Axis of Resistance, who we understand are fighting for our collective international liberation, than we are identifying with our own corrupt, fascist, pedophilic, and genocidal ruling classes, systems, and cultures, which we hope to see obliterated into the dustbins of history.
She’s not an eccentric, she’s just part of the pattern. I think she may be right about that. As I wrote last year, most of the people protesting Israel on college campuses have views not very different from hers. Hasan Piker, who has praised both China and Cuba recently, has views that seem indistinguishable from hers.
This is just what a significant portion of young Democrats are today. They started with the Green New Deal and now they’re simping for Cuba and Iran and hoping for the destruction of the United States.
