Travis Kelce #87 of the Kansas City Chiefs looks on prior to the game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.
The New York Giants have a new level of clout surrounding their franchise since they hired John Harbaugh to be their next head coach, and it’s led to plenty of rumors and speculation about who could be joining the Giants this offseason.
The latest rumor, from WFAN radio host Craig Carton, suggests that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce would like to finish his career in New York.
“The rumors that Travis Kelce is not gonna retire, that he wants to come back for another year, but he does not want to come back to Kansas City,” Carton said on his podcast. “Do not sleep on the New York Giants signing Travis Kelce this offseason.”
Do the Giants have a chance of stealing away Kelce from the Chiefs in free agency?
The Taylor Swift Factor
Carton’s main reasoning behind why Kelce could make the switch to the New York Giants lies with his incredibly famous fiancée, Taylor Swift.
Swift lives in New York, and the distance between them while Kelce is in-season with the Kansas City Chiefs must be hard. If he signed with the Giants, it would be much easier for the two to be together, especially during football season.
“Travis Kelce wants to come back and wants to play for the New York Giants. That way, he and his wife can live in New York City. She goes to every game, she does not have a tour planned for next season…he is in the biggest media market in America.”
There have been questions about whether or not Kelce will actually be returning to the NFL for his 14th season. He’s left the decision up in the air since the end of the season.
While an official announcement has yet to be made, ESPN’s Nate Taylor indicated that, for all intents and purposes, Kelce seems to be planning on returning to the NFL for at least one more go.
“He’s coming back, guys. Every indication I’ve gotten is that Travis Kelce is looking forward to coming back. When we’ll know that for sure? That’s really his prerogative,” Taylor told 96.5 The FAN’s Cody and Gold.
But could Kelce take his talents elsewhere for the first time in his illustrious career?
How Realistic is a Giants-Travis Kelce Pairing?
The New York Giants don’t necessarily seem like the ideal spot for Kelce. Why would he want to part with longtime quarterback Patrick Mahomes and leave a team that he’s won four Super Bowls with?
Aside from being closer to his future wife, Swift, the Giants don’t seem as equipped to win now as the Kansas City Chiefs.
But put that aside and say all he wants is to be in New York. Then, he would certainly make a fine addition to the Giants and be an incredible pass-catching option for second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart.
Spotrac projects Kelce to ink a one-year, $10.8 million deal in free agency, something the Giants could certainly stomach for a player of his talents, despite his age.
He could even prove to be a great mentor for youngster Theo Johnson, who has shown flashes throughout his short NFL career, but hasn’t put it all together just yet.
Kelce’s leadership alone would make him a great addition to New York, and it’s something the Giants could desperately use as Harbaugh looks to establish a winning culture inside the building.
It would also be quite the spectacle to see Swift seated at MetLife Stadium for each Giants home game.
