Dietitian Jess Burvill shared her top healthy food finds at Aldi - including Wild Origins Soy & Linseed Sourdough, $4.99

A dietitian has revealed 11 nutritional finds stocked at Aldi supermarkets, proving that eating healthy doesn’t have to be expensive.

Accredited Practising Dietitian Jess Burvill listed ‘an absolute treasure trove of budget-friendly staples and solid dupes of big-name brands’ – all available at Aldi stores across Australia.

The health coach highlighted the products for being both nutritious and budget-friendly, with her suggestions spanning everyday staples, snacks, pantry items and even a sweet treat.

‘This is not an exclusive list, but these are some of the products I rate highly,’ she said in a post shared to her @dailyservenutrition account.

1. Wild Origins Soy & Linseed Sourdough, $4.99

Bread is an everyday item for most households, and Jess’ hot tip is that Aldi’s exclusive Wild Origins sourdough is an excellent dupe for artisan bakery Sonoma’s loaves. At Woolworths, Sonoma Sliced Whole Soybean & Linseed Sourdough loaf sells for $8.50.

‘The ingredients and nutrition are similar – but not identical – to the Sonoma bread sold in Woolworths, but this one is $3.50 cheaper!’

Not a sourdough fan? Jess noted in her recent post that Wild Origins also makes ‘a rye version that is also very good.’

2. Yoguri Greek Style Strained Yoghurt Plain 900g tub, $5.89

The secret is already out on Jess’ Aldi yoghurt pick, Yoguri Greek Style Strained Yoghurt, with Aldi shoppers recently reporting that this product is increasingly tricky to find on the shelf. Nevertheless, Jess’ assessment of the product proves the hype is valid.

‘This Greek-style “authentically strained” yoghurt has simple ingredients: just skim milk and live cultures,’ she notes.

Additionally, the dietitian noted that it has a very similar nutritional breakdown to the extremely popular mainstream brand Chobani Light Greek Yoghurt – ‘but is around 30 per cent cheaper’.

3. Brooklea No Added Sugar Raspberry Yoghurt Pouch, $1.19

Speaking of yoghurts, Jess was pleasantly surprised by the Brooklea No Added Sugar pouch range sold at the discount supermarket.

‘One of the better kids’ yoghurt pouch ranges. Simple ingredients, no added sugar and a decent amount of calcium to support growing bodies. And all at a bargain price!’

The pouches – perfect for lunchboxes – come in Raspberry, Strawberry, Vanilla and Tropical flavours.

4. Hillcrest Paleo Bars 5 pack, $4.99 and 5. Hillcrest Premium Nut Bars 5 pack, $3.99

Two different Hillcrest snack bars made the health expert’s cut, with Jess championing them both as fantastic options for an on-the-go snack.

The first, Hillcrest Paleo Bars, come in Hazelnut & Cocoa or Date, Pecan & Almond.

‘Made almost entirely from dates and nuts, these bars are naturally sweet (without added sugar) and are a nourishing whole food snack,’ Jess explained.

The other snack bar earning Jess’ tick of approval was Hillcrest Premium Nut Bars, which come in a pack of 5 and cost $1 less.

‘These are a solid snack choice made from 64% nuts and seeds, with less than 5g sugar per bar.’

6. Deli Originals Fresh Hommus Dip Multipack $2.49

‘Hommus is the queen of dips when it comes to nutrition,’ Jess enthuses. ‘These 3-packs come in handy snack-sized portions.’

Convenient lunch options singled out by the dietitian were the The Fresh Salad Co Lentil Tabbouleh Salad, $6 and the Portview Power Bowl, which came in three, $2.99

The expert added that hommus paired with chopped carrots, celery or capsicum is a ‘tasty way to add another serve of veg to your day’.

7. The Fresh Salad Co Lentil Tabbouleh Salad, $6

This pre-made salad, containing lentils, chickpeas, vegetables and a zesty lemon dressing, caught Jess’ eye as a convenient and healthy lunch option.

‘Pair it with canned tuna or salmon and you’ve got a high-protein, high-fibre meal that will keep you going all arvo,’ she recommended.

8. Portview Power Bowl, $2.99

Another ‘handy’ Aldi lunch option is the Portview Power Bowl range, which contain a variety of tuna and bean combos.

‘Keep them in the cupboard for busy days or to chuck in your bag for work,’ Jess suggested, noting each bowl is around 250 calories per serve and offers ‘a decent hit of fibre and protein thanks to the combo of tuna and beans’.

The bowls can be enjoyed cold or gently heated and are available in three varieties: ‘Iron’, which is tuna with roasted capsicum and three bean bowl; ‘Magnesium’ that contains tuna with brown rice, chargrilled corn, black beans, lime and chilli; and ‘Vitamin B12’, which features tuna with brown rice, pearl couscous, tomato and onion.

9. Snack’N’Go Blackbeans with lime & herbs with corn, Snack’N’Go Chickpeas with olive oil, garlic and rosemary, Snack’N’Go Chickpeas with zesty vinaigrette, $0.99 per can

‘These are a good dupe of the Edgell Snack Time range available in the major supermarkets,’ Jess observed.

‘I always have a stash of these in the cupboard and they’re perfect for throwing into lunch salads.’

‘One can adds around 5g of protein and 4g of fibre, plus you get extra flavour from the dressing.’

10. Imperial Grain Super Blend Microwave Rice Pouch 250g, $1.99

Microwave rice pouches are another pantry item many households like to keep on hand as an emergency meal accompaniment – and Jess says the wholegrain options at Aldi are excellent.

‘Just heat and serve for an instant fibre boost to your meals,’ Jess says.

‘One 125g serve of the Super Blend mix delivers 100 per cent of the recommended daily wholegrain target.’

The health expert says even your guilt-free sweet treat can be found on the shelves of the discount supermarket, with her go-to being a block of Moser Roth Finest Dark Chocolate 70% Cocoa.

‘This dark chocolate is soooo good, comes perfectly portioned in 25g individual packs – and is half the price of Lindt.

‘Dark choc also contains anti-inflammatory polyphenols as well as iron, zinc, magnesium and copper,’ she adds.
