Party season is just around the corner and High Street stores are groaning under the weight of glittery cocktail dresses.

But if, like me, you’re much more of a ‘jeans and T-shirt’ than ‘little black dress’ type, the sight of all those sequins and sparkles can be a bit overwhelming. The good news is that you don’t need to ditch your beloved denim and force yourself into something that really isn’t you.

With retailers, such as Next and H&M, wise to the fact that many of their customers prefer to keep it more casual at Christmas, they’re carrying a wide selection of party jeans that are dressier than everyday options while still keeping you firmly within your comfort zone – and they’re much more versatile than you might think, too. You can still wear a classic tee with your chosen pair of party denims, if that’s your thing, or try teaming an oversized tuxedo jacket with flares.

And if you don’t want your party glam to come at the expense of warmth, there’s an array of luxury knitwear around that will keep you cosy on a chilly winter’s evening. Subtle designs, like Maje’s studded pair, can be worn all year round. I’ll be throwing on oversized jumpers and wearing mine well into 2026!

From sequins to bows, I’ve tried on 30 pairs to bring you my pick of the best of this season’s cocktail denim, starting from only £39.99. These will all look fabulous at any age.

Essentiel Antwerp (Sequin)

I usually prefer darker denim in the winter months, but the blue and black sequin embellishment and the cut of the super-soft fabric makes this pair look dressy without teetering into Too Much territory. Better still, the sequins are only on the front – so if you prefer to sit down at parties rather than boogie on the dance floor, you won’t have anything sharp digging into the back of your legs or leaving an imprint on the bar stool. Genius! These are perfect with a velvet blazer.

Next (Diamante)

Take the worry out of what to pair with your party denim with this matching set. These soft, wide-leg jeans come with a matching shell top – and yes, you can do double diamante denim for Christmas. Wear as separates after the party season when it’s time to tone down the sparkle.

H&M (Metallic)

I like my jeans to be comfy, not crackly, so rigid denim and metallics are two things I normally steer clear of. However, these are so flattering that I’ve been converted. The shape and crease at the front elongates your legs, turning you into an instant disco diva. They make such a statement that you just need to pair them with a crisp white shirt to strike the perfect balance. Great for all ages – just ask my 60-year-old mum who has already borrowed them!

Paige (Velvet)

I’m a huge fan of Paige’s denim, so it’s great that it offers velvet options in its popular styles, including these Anessa wide-leg ones. Cropped at the ankle to show off your fancy footwear, they’re the perfect jean to take you from the desk to the dance floor.

Next (Bows)

Not all partywear has to sparkle. If you’re not sold on sequins then these jeans from Next take a more subtle approach. The barrel leg has been the trending silhouette of the year – add a smattering of black bows and the result is jeans that look much more expensive than they are… and very Simone Rocha.

Good American (Rhinestone)

Good American is a godsend for curvy women like me, as it knows how to cut its denim in a way that flatters those of us with wider hips who don’t suit skinny styles. Featuring vertical diamantes all over (which creates an instant slimming illusion) you’d expect these jeans to be stiff and uncomfortable, but they’re surprisingly soft and flexible – meaning you can dance the night away in style and comfort.

Maje (Studded)

Worried about sequins flying off when you walk? Find diamantes just a little too much for you? This pair of wide-leg jeans from Parisian brand Maje could be the answer. The metallic studs add a touch of chic shine without dipping into full-on dazzle.
