Last year Rusk reported Mike Tindall's net worth was £15.7 million, with much of that being put down to his connection with the royal family after he married Zara Tindall in 2011 (pictured: The couple at the Queen's funeral)

As former England rugby star and member of the royal family Mike Tindall prepares to head into the jungle for the new series of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, experts have suggested he may be getting paid up to £150,000 for the experience.

Joining mega star Boy George and former health secretary Matt Hancock, Mike will be one of the higher-paid stars in this year’s camp – but many may argue he’s not in need of the money given his lucrative advertisement deals, former status as a rugby world cup winner and the fact that he’s married to Princess Anne’s daughter.

Last year, Ruck reported that Mike, who married Zara Tindall in 2011, was the fourth-richest rugby player in the UK with a net worth of around £15.7 million.

But aside from his marriage to the person 20th in line to the throne, where does his fortune come from?

Mike, 44, spent 17 years playing rugby before his retirement in 2014. During this time, he made 75 appearances for England, including playing in the 2003 World Cup winning team alongside Johnny Wilkinson.

Following his retirement as a player, Mike worked on the coaching staff for Gloucester, his former rugby club, where he is thought to have earnt between £100,000-£200,000 a year, according to Now to Love.

Although it is unclear exactly how much Mike earnt as part of the World Cup winning team, The Telegraph reported at the time that his teammate Johnny was set to earn more than £1.7 million the following year through endorsement deals, which gives some idea of how lucrative a place in that squad may have been.

These days, it is estimated that an England Rugby star who has made more than 50 international appearances earns around £325,306, according to Sky Sports.

While the money would have been significantly less when Mike played in 2003, it was still likely to have been a hefty salary.

Mike’s rugby career set him up for other lucrative opportunities including his podcast, The Good, The Bad and The Rugby, which he hosts alongside Alex Payne and James Haskell.

He is also a popular booking for after dinner speeches to talk about his rugby career. While Mike’s exact fee is unknown, it is likely that, as a recognisable celebrity, he could bring in fees in the tens of thousands for one appearance.

Endorsement and advertisement deals

In addition to Mike’s rugby career, he and Zara each have a long list of brand ambassadorships with names such as Musto, Rolex, Land Rover, which are estimated to bring in more than £1 million a year, but many are tied to sport and horse riding.

However in recent weeks, his face has popped up somewhat unexpectedly in some television adverts – first for Domino’s Pizza and then for Amazon Prime.

In the Amazon Prime advert, the former rugby ace is mocked as it it suggested he is more recognisable for being ‘Zara Phillips’s husband’ than for his 17-year career.

The Domino’s advert makes similar references to Mike’s position within the royal family.

As he lands in a helicopter and emerges carrying a box of pizzas, which he delivers to his friend James Haskell, he jokes about having ‘friends in high places’.

Brand expert Nick Ede told FEMAIL: ‘With these kind of ad deals, Mike Tindall will be making around £300,000 for the Domino’s advert. For the Amazon, which he is not in as much, around £150,000 for this.’

Just as royal fans were reeling from Mike’s appearances in the TV adverts, they were also surprised with the news he will appear on this year’s series of I’m a Celebrity… Get me Out of Here!

Joining megastar Boy George and former health secretary Matt Hancock as a campmate this year, Mike is thought to be receiving a fee of around £150,000 for the appearance.

Nick Ede told FEMAIL: ‘I am sure Mike will have been paid in excess of £150,000 to appear.’

He added the former rugby ace would likely be in line for even more lucrative work after the show has finished.

‘The true value of the show is what you do after it,’ he said. ‘Whether he gets a prime role as a sports pundit or panelist or host of a show who knows but for ‘brand Tindall’ this is a great step and will increase his celebrity equity ten fold. All eyes will be on Mike this year.’

He added: ‘There may well be two kings in the Royal Family this year – one of the crown and one of the jungle.’

In addition to his more glamorous earnings, Mike runs a company, Kimble Trading Ltd, which oversees various business activities – including managing his speaking appearances.

It is thought that Mike earns a six-figure salary from the company, although he came under fire during the pandemic after it was revealed Kimble Trading had received furlough cash.

According to The Sun, the company’s accounts said: ‘The outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent restrictions imposed have led to a number of events in 2020 being cancelled.

‘The company has taken advantage of all available government aid in order to support the business and its employees through the crisis.’

He faced backlash for claiming furlough despite being a member of the Royal Family.
